The college has a vast campus of 43 acres. With technology being dynamic, it updates the infrastructure, machinery, laboratories, and computers regularly.
The indispensable parts of the NFSC infrastructure as discussed below are important for an effective learning experience.
The National Fire Service College laboratories are maintained with the latest equipment. The trained staff is capable of demonstrating the chemical actions of multiple fire prevention measures and their counter-reaction. This is very useful when such measures are to be taken in the presence of hazardous chemicals or any electrical equipment.
The students of B.E. (Fire Engineering) perform experiments related to fire prevention and protection. In this, they learn about chemical extinguishers, foam compounds, and dry-powders along with their testing based on the Indian Standard Specifications.
There are two special laboratories at this college- the Wireless Communication Laboratory and the Paramedics Laboratory.
The Wireless Communication Laboratory has radio receivers of almost all types, instruments that Fire Officers use in the field like static and mobile radios, chargers, walkie-talkies, wave analyzers, and many more. The students are exposed to handling and maintenance of such equipment. A considerable amount of tactical exercises are conducted utilizing the installed equipment of the Mobile Control Van.
In the Paramedics Laboratory, the students are given theoretical and practical training by experts to handle any kind of medical emergency. Training is given in basic anatomy, first aid, burn injuries, a study of disinfectants, stretcher drills, cardiopulmonary resuscitation training, and the role fire officers play in chemical, nuclear and biological disasters. Training also includes paramedical care like injuries, animal bites, fractures, unconsciousness, etc. Additionally, students visit hospitals under the Chief Medical Officer’s supervision.
The NFSC library has a vast collection of over 10000 books. Most of these pertain to fire safety engineering. It has numerous journals, both national and international, from various organizations. It has a subscription to magazines and journals in the field of fire engineering. This keeps it abreast of the current practices and latest developments from the likes of USA and UK, and institutions such as the National Fire Protection Association, Institute of Fire Engineers (India), Bureau of Indian Standards, and LPA.
It has ample copies of encyclopedias. There are General Encyclopedias as well as those on Safety, Health, and Environment. Access to a rich collection of books makes this a good knowledge hub for the students and the teaching faculty alike.
The college has facilitated its classrooms with overhead projectors and slide projectors. They are used to show films and videos of fire fighting activities to students as part of their training. With more than 130 such videos available, the students get an opportunity to see how perilous situations are handled in reality.
The NFSC workshop is also an integral part of the infrastructure. It is equipped with numerous instruments like primers, cut model pumps, and tools needed for repairing the available appliances. The workshop also houses various electrical equipment and automobiles. It enables the students to have hands-on experience with types of machinery and equipment vital to fire fighting and protection.
The ministry of home affairs inaugurated a fixed fire fighting installation lab and simulation zone at the National Fire Service College, Nagpur in 2019. The purpose of the simulation zone is to practice fire loss prevention.
It is the first of its kind where such type of training will be provided in a simulation zone. The training is aimed at fire officers and engineers who graduated in fire protection working in the area of fire loss prevention in India. The simulation zone is equipped with a heart-pump room, riser system, get-wet laboratory, CO2 total flooding system, and water mist system.
Representative of Underwriters Laboratories Inc., Dipti Gharat, inaugurated the student chapter of the Society for Fire Prevention Engineering (SFPE) in 2018. This is the first one at this college. Society for Fire Prevention Engineering is a non-profit organization. It is a professional society that represents the trained personnel in the field of fire safety engineering and fire protection.
This college started a four-year degree course in B.E. Fire Engineering from the 2015-2016 session. This NFSC course is approved by the AICTE.
It signed a memorandum of understanding with Underwriters Laboratories Inc., a leader in global safety science, in 2021. The aim is to advance lithium-ion battery fire safety and standardization in India with better collaboration. This MoU is part of a fire research study “Battery Fires: Study of Response Strategy of Indian Fire Services”.
According to the memorandum, National Fire Safety College and the Underwriters Laboratories Inc. will look for opportunities to team up with other organizations. These organizations would help guide in matters of battery fires in electric mobility & grid energy storage systems.
