Located in the ‘Silk City’ of India, Bhagalpur, Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU) is named after the famous freedom fighter Tilka Manjhi. The sprawling campus of TMBU spreads across 264 acres of land, holding well-built architecture and facilities. TMBU is a well-known state university in Bihar for offering arts and science education. Under its umbrella, it offers 47 courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate, certificate, diploma, and doctoral levels. Also, it has been accredited with the grade ‘B’ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). 

Along with academic programmes, TMBU provides coaching facilities for the preparation of government examinations sponsored by the University Grants Commission (UGC). It has also initiated various collaborative research projects with national and international institutions to provide ample exposure to students. However, TMBU is still figuring out ways to provide internship and placement opportunities to the students. 

Though it is considered one of the best universities in Bihar, its status is equal to that of a tier-3 university in India, according to the report by Auston University. Let’s break the ice and understand more about TMBU in this article. 

TMBU Ranking: Why only India Today? 

Our Take: 

TMBU has not been ranked by or participated in any popular ranking assessment in the last three years. However, it was ranked under the management category by India Today in 2019 and 2020. It reflects a considerable recognition of TMBU in the management domain. Yet, no further rankings create a foggy image! 

TMBU Academia & Batch Size

TMBU offers an array of courses in the Arts, Science, Education, Management, and Law streams. Some of its popular courses are BA, B.Sc, MA, M.Sc, B.Ed, and MBA. The curriculum is based on a Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) that allows students to choose electives based on their interests. As per the students’ reviews, the curriculum is relevant but doesn’t provide industry exposure. However, lab and co-curricular activities are held regularly. Moreover, the difficulty level of semester examinations is medium. Furthermore, TMBU hasn’t published any relevant reports representing the batch size of the university. Hence, it remains a mystery! 

Our Take: 

TMBU offers a wide range of courses for students to choose from. However, it lacks technical courses such as BTech and MTech. Apart from that, the curriculum imparts theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience through lab and co-curricular sessions. However, it lacks in offering industry experience due to the unavailability of internship opportunities. 

TMBU Infrastructure

Classroom:

The classrooms at TMB University have basic infrastructure like benches, desks, and blackboards. The classrooms are spacious, well-ventilated, and Wi-Fi-connected. As per students’ reviews on internet forums, some classrooms are ICT-enabled. 

Auditorium/ Seminar Halls/ Labs:

The university has a multipurpose hall for organising activities and events. There are various seminar halls and laboratories in different departments.  Students have opined that TMBU is the only university with proper infrastructure in Bhagalpur. 

Library:

There is a central library at TMBU, which has a vast collection of books, magazines, theses, and journals. The seating area is available for staff and research scholars. 

Internet:

Wi-Fi facilities are available across the campus of TMBU. The speed of the internet is around 20 Mbps, which is not very fast. 

Hostel:

TMBU provides hostel facilities to male and female students at nominal fees. There are separate hostels for research and OBC students. Also, single accommodation is available in a few hostels. Based on students’ reviews, the hostel rooms have basic amenities such as a bed, table, chair, and cupboard. Apart from that, indoor and outdoor recreational facilities are also available.

Activities:

Seminars, language sessions, and festive activities are held once in a while. However, sports activities are conducted regularly, as per the students. 

Cafe/Hang-out:

‘Samosa and cold drinks’ are the favourite snacks of TMBU students at the campus canteen. Apart from that, one can explore temples, parks, and local markets near the campus. There are some food joints, such as Domino's and Pizza Hut, where students can chill out with friends. One can also hang out in malls like Vishal here. 

Our Take:

TMBU has basic infrastructure and facilities. There’s nothing fancy, but everything essential is available on campus! Students have labs for practicals, grounds for sports activities, an auditorium for events, a library for learning, a canteen for food, and hostels for accommodation. The area surrounding the university also provides students with multiple options for spending some recreational time with friends.   

TMBU Internships and Placements 

TMBU does not provide internship opportunities to its students, according to the students’ reviews. Hardly any company pays a visit to the university to recruit interns. The students look for off-campus internship opportunities in nearby areas. 

Likewise, the placement opportunities at TMBU are negligible, as no data is available regarding TMBU placements. The university has a counselling and placement cell, but it is not as operational as it should be. Also, the university hasn’t published any relevant information about placements or internships for reference. 

Our Take:

It is evident that TMBU completely lacks in providing industry exposure and job opportunities to its students. It is highly recommended for students looking for hands-on experience and placements to look for other options. 

TMBU Diversity & Demographics

Located in the small city of Bhagalpur, TMBU’s student population comprises mainly local students. There are no proper reports available that include data on diversity and demographics. According to Youth4work, the approximate male-to-female ratio of TMBU is 80%:20%, which is highly unbalanced. 

Our Take:

Students are left unaware of the diversity and gender representation of TMBU due to the non-publishing of public reports. Even the available gender ratio creates a male-centric image of TMBU. 

TMBU Faculty/College Administration & Management

TMBU is a well-known name in Bihar for arts and science due to its experienced faculty and teaching methods. According to the student, TMBU has knowledgeable and supportive teachers.  

TMBU has retained its popularity due to its administrative members and management. Students say that regular classes are conducted at the university with lab sessions and co-curricular activities. The examinations are also held on time. The management is approachable and listens to students’ queries. 

Our Take:

TMBU can be considered a good option in Bhagalpur for its experienced faculty and supportive management. However, some teachers lack genuine intent to teach and don’t take an active part in the development of students. Also, in 2017, 94 students from the PG Hindi programme could not appear for their last exam in the 2nd semester as the question papers were not printed. This points out that the university has scope for improving its administrative functions.  

TMBU Location

The Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University is located in Bhagalpur, Bihar. It is a suburban region but well-connected via roads and railways. The nearest bus stop is Tilka Manjhi Chowk Bus Stop, which is 5 km away from the campus. Bhagalpur Railway Station is the nearest railway station, located at a distance of 2 km. 

TMBU: Expectation vs Reality CLD Verdict!

TMBU, being a popular university in Bihar, tries its best to provide adequate facilities and better education quality. However, it is way behind various state universities across the country in terms of exposure and placements. The low fee structure, ranging from Rs 2,000 to 1,00,000, helps economically backward students pursue higher education. Though the exposure is limited, TMBU ensures guidance for students in the preparation of competitive exams. 

Overall, students who wish to continue their education in Bhagalpur can choose TMBU without expecting any exposure opportunities.
