NUJS Kolkata admission process is primarily an entrance-test-based process. So, students need to know that they must take the prescribed entrance exam to be eligible for admission to the university. However, they also need to meet the course-specific NUJS Kolkata eligibility criteria to be considered for admission. There is a centralised counselling process for NUJS Kolkata admission to BA LLB, B.Sc LLB, and LLM programmes. Students also need to participate in this counselling process.
Step 1: BA LLB, B.Sc LLB, and LLM candidates must register themselves for the CLAT exam by visiting the CLAT official website (consortiumofnlus.ac.in). They must choose NUJS Kolkata as one of their university preferences while applying for CLAT. On the other hand, PhD/ LLD candidates may apply directly to the university after taking the prescribed entrance exam.
Step 2: Successful CLAT candidates will be allocated seats at the university as per their CLAT ranks and university preferences followed by the counselling process conducted by the Consortium of NLUs. PhD/ LLD candidates need to participate in personal interviews to get admission to the university.
Step 3: Provisionally selected candidates for admission need to visit the campus for document verification. They also need to pay the NUJS Kolkata admission fees to finalise their provisional admission to the university.
NUJS Kolkata UG admission is done based on the CLAT UG scores obtained by the candidates. They also need to make sure that they satisfy the eligibility criteria before taking the exam. As per the NUJS Kolkata eligibility criteria for UG courses, candidates must have passed Class 12 with a minimum of 45% marks from a recognised board. The NUJS Kolkata selection criteria for UG courses include a counselling round by the Consortium of NLUs.

NUJS Kolkata admissions are provided under both the Foreign National category and the NRI/ NRI-sponsored category. The institute offers only UG programmes to NRI/ NRI-sponsored category students with an annual intake of 20 for BA LLB and 10 for B.Sc LLB. On the other hand, Foreign National candidates can join both UG and PG programmes at the institute. Candidates need to meet NUJS Kolkata admission criteria for international students to get into these programmes.
The Consortium of NLUs releases NUJS Kolkata seat allotment in a round-wise format. The seat allotment results are affected by several factors, including a candidate’s CLAT rank, his/ her reservation category, and choice-filling by the candidate. Therefore, choice-filling becomes an important component of the seat allotment process. While filling out the choice of institute, there are three options available to candidates - freeze, float, and exit.
Freeze: Choosing the freeze option comes into play if you are allocated a seat at NUJS Kolkata and you are happy with the allocation. The freeze option provides a sense of certainty to students that they have secured a seat at the institute. By choosing freeze, candidates eliminate the chance of securing a seat at another institute in the next round.
Float: The float option ensures that a student keeps his/ her possibility to get a better institute in the next round of CLAT counselling while accepting a seat at NUJS Kolkata. In other words, it offers you the possibility of a better NLU along with a backup seat. The only drawback of this option is that if you get a better seat in the next round, you must relinquish the previous one. You will also not get any refund on the confirmation fee paid previously.
Exit: The exit option simply means you are willing to exit from the CLAT counselling process. As a result of choosing the exit option, your candidature for NUJS Kolkata admission will be cancelled. This option is only useful to you if you have changed your mind regarding pursuing law as a career or looking to get into another institute other than the NLUs.
NUJS Kolkata application process can be completed online. Candidates must know that they need to submit the application for the institute through CLAT.
