Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology is an Indian state-run university in Burla, Sambalpur. It was established in 1956 and is Odisha's oldest engineering institution. Its old name, UCE Burla, was officially changed to its current name on June 10, 2009, following a determination by the Government of Odisha to grant it unitary university status.

VSSUT was established as the University College of Engineering (UCE), Burla, by the Government of Odisha as the state's first engineering college. The college's main goal was to provide white-collar personnel to the nearby Hirakud Dam project in the form of electrical, civil, and mechanical engineers. Jawaharlal Nehru, the country's first Prime Minister, set the foundation for the college. The initial batch consisted of 20 students from three different engineering branches: Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The university was then placed under the administrative administration of Sambalpur University and then the Biju Patnaik University of Technology. UCE students actively pushed for due recognition as an independent university beginning in 2008, culminating in the university's establishment in 2009.

The institution sits on around 300 acres of good land in Burla, adjacent to the Hirakud dam. It is continually reorganising and modernising its physical infrastructure and its research and education facilities to keep up with modern advances. Students on the Campus have access to laboratories from several departments and central facilities such as the Computer Centre, Library, Internet Centre, workshop and separate dorms for boys and girls, conference halls, recreational amenities, and other utility services.

VSSUT offers more than 16 programmes in nine streams at UG, PG, and Doctoral levels. VSSUT Odisha courses include Engineering and Architecture,  Humanities, Science, Physics, Chemistry,  Computer Application and IT, Maths, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electronics, telecommunication, Etc.

• At BAJA-SAE India 2020 in Punjab, there will be an AIR-1 in Design, Go-Green, and CAE event.
• BAJA-SAE team won AIR-1 in the Dirt-X and Endurance events at Enduro Student India 2017 in Coimbatore.
• ROBOCON-2018 AIR-3 in MATLAB Innovation
• At FFS INDIA 2k19, Coimbatore, AIR-2 placed VSSUT third in the Cost Presentation Event and fourth in the Design Evaluation Event in the EYANTRA Robotics Competition hosted by IIT, Bombay. They even came seventh overall in the competition.
• In the Limca Book of Records, the India Innovation Growth Programme (IIGP 2.0) winners organised the TATA Trust & DST Student satellite programme.
• The Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, acknowledged the student satellite team in his monthly radio address, Mann ki Baat, for their resounding success in creating completely functional satellite launch vehicle prototypes.
• VSSUT became the winner of the University Challenge, Government of India's IIGP 2.0 (Indian Innovation Growth Programme)

• The University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, has acknowledged this State Government University under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act.
• It is ranked 119th among engineering institutions by the National Institutional Ranking Framework.

VSSUT Burla Accreditations 

• NBA accreditation has been granted to the university's seven undergraduate and eight graduate courses. 
• During the 2016-17 academic years, the university was also granted NAAC accreditation.
• The AICTE has approved all of the VSSUT courses.
