Manipur University was established on June 5, 1980, under the Manipur University Act 1980. It was recognised as a central University in 2005. Manipur University conducts its own entrance exam (MUET) for admission to different courses. It also accepts valid scores obtained in various entrance tests such as CUET UG/PG, CAT, and GMAT. Manipur University campus spreads across 287 acres of lush green land in Imphal, Manipur. It is known for its infrastructure and facilities. Library: Manipur University library has a collection of more than 1,90,000 books and 8,600 e-Journals. The library is a part of UGC INFONET which provides direct access to databases. The opening and closing timing of the library is from 9 am to 7 pm on all working days. On holidays and Sundays, it is open from 10 am to 4 pm. The library of Manipur University also has 24x7 internet connectivity for ease of access to students and teachers.

Manipur University Scholarship is offered to PhD students in the form of fellowships. The students who have passed the UGC/CSIR/National (OBC/SC/ST)/Inspire Fellowships examinations receive fellowships directly from the UGC/CSIR/Concern Ministry. Manipur university scholarship is also awarded to meritorious students (one student from each PG course offered by the university's departments). For the first year, the scholarship is based on the highest marks obtained during the admission test to the PG programmes, and for the second year, it is based on the marks obtained in the first year.
