GNDU, also known as Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar, was established in 1969. The university is approved by UGC and has received the NAAC accreditation with ‘A++’ Grade. GNDU is a government university having regional campuses in Jalandhar, Gurdaspur, Fattu Dhinga, and Sathiala. GNDU is among the top north Indian universities with a score of 3.85 out of 4.0 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

GNDU courses are offered through the university's 14 departments of education namely Economics and Business, Arts and Social Science, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences, Language, Science, Law, Physical Education and others.

GNDU admission is offered either based on merit or on the basis of the entrance examination. The university accepts JEE Main scores for B.Tech admissions and NATA scores for B.Arch admissions. Moreover, for B.Ed admissions, the scores of the National Common Entrance Test (NCET) are considered. Candidates willing to pursue an M.Tech course at GNDU Amritsar shall have a valid GATE score. On the other hand, GNDU admission to the M.Phil or PhD programme is based on the entrance exam followed by the qualification of merit list.
GNDU Open and Distance Learning admissions are offered for students willing to pursue their education in online mode. The university has been granted permission for an online/distance learning programme by the Distance Education Bureau, UGC, New Delhi. GNDU scholarship is offered to meritorious students. The Punjab government also offers post-metric scholarships, national scholarships, state merit scholarships and non-Hindi speaking scholarships to the students of the university. However, it offers BSc (Hons) degree in numerous other specialisations including Agriculture, Medical Lab Technology, Dietetics and Nutrition etc. There is no entrance exam for admission in BSc courses. Selection is done based on marks obtained by candidates in Class 12.
