Students Activities & Clubs

Nature Club -

AVANI, the Environment Club at JDMC was started a decade ago.
We already had a base in a water harvesting system since the 1990's, the only one at Delhi University, for which we received the Chief Ministers institutional award in 2007.
Today we have 3 functional WH Pits which have enhanced our water table by 40 percent.

From its inception the ideology of the club has been awareness and action through both community and hands on individual experience.

We have completed several projects in this decade which include the complete conversion of the college to CFL.

We also have a paper waste exchange program with the NGO SCOPEPLUS.

We also have workshops with students on creating artifacts from waste and clay.

We have also brought Solarpower to the campus through streetlights.

Besides these college based activities, we engage in annual activities for students to build a green environment and consciousness.

Drama Club -

The Shakespeare Society of Janki Devi Memorial College was instituted in 2011 when a small group of students were sent for the Annual Shakespeare Inter-collegiate Drama Competition organized by the Shakespeare Society of India (SSI). The students presented a scene from As You Like It. In 2012 the students participated with a scene from Twelfth Night. This became an annual feature and this year the society blossomed as the students won the prize for best execution and second best actor for their performance of a scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In an effort to encourage students from across disciplines to engage with the world of Shakespeare’s plays, the college decided to organize a public performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The society provided professional exposure to the students by engaging them in all aspects of the production from acting to set design and costumes. In 2014 the students performed an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus titled “Most wise Rebellion: An adaptation of Coriolanus”. The play won the Third Best team prize and a special mention in acting. In 2015 the group performed a feminist adaptation of Taming of the Shrew and won the Best Original Concept.

Debating Club -

The English Debating Society of Janki Devi Memorial College is one of the popular and active societies of the college since its inception. Members of the society come from various departments and interact amongst each other providing a suitable platform for exchange of ideas. The society aims to inculcate a spirit of healthy discussion and a keen interest in acquiring a broad based knowledge about contemporary events. A particular emphasis is also placed on rhetorical and linguistic enhancement along with pronunciation and elocution. Regular mock sessions are conducted by the society members in order to rehearse the various forms of debating.

The entry into the society is through auditions which are held at the beginning of each session in July. The last few years have seen a steady progress in active participation and winning laurels for the college. The highlight of this year’s achievement is the society members winning the first prize at Antardhwani 2015.

AXIOM which is the annual parliamentary debate tournament organised by the society is very popular in the debate circuit of Delhi University. Last year the society introduced a fresher’s debate competition which was well taken by the young debaters of Delhi University. One of the major events conducted by the society is to co-host the Great Debate in collaboration with the British High Commission in September 2014.

Cultural Club -

Western Music started as an event for Symphony, the annual college cultural festival, in 2005 and remained so for another two years. The competition was generally issue/genre based such as Blues/ songs related to the idea of Revolution, etc. Right from the beginning, the event was a great hit and close to 14 colleges would participate in various categories such as solo, duet and group. Well known rock bands such as Them Clones and Parikrama judged the competition. In these initial years, students interested in Western Music were identified. They rehearsed with the help of amateur trainers and very few instruments donated by faculty members. Gradually they began performing not just for inter college fests where they bagged prizes, but for other events within the college. In 2007, the Western Music Society named Euphonie was formed. Thereafter, the students have participated and have won numerous prizes in inter as well as intra musical competitions like BITS Pilani, IIT Delhi, Tempest-Miranda House to name a few.

Along with participating in the plethora of Western Music competitions in the various colleges/universities in and around Delhi, the members also take special interest in various dramatic performances, in which they participate as active members of ‘Bardolators’, the Shakespeare society of the college with a special focus on the Shakespeare Society of India national competition. The members from Euphonie add a musical element to the Shakespearean proceedings by adapting to choral voices, and musical forms of narratives which take the audience by surprise. Members of Euphonie were also actively engaged in the college production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in 2012, where the play was performed both at college, and at the Shri Ram Centre, Mandi House. This was received with great adulation.

Literary Club -

In a world undergoing massive change with conflicts of numerous kinds, Gandhian values and ideas offer alternative, culturally rooted and inclusive solutions. This has never been truer than for our cotemporary times. In out attempt to translate Gandhian values into practice, the Gandhi Study Circle JDMC works through three nodes of activities viz. [i] a Certificate Course in Peace and Conflict Studies [ii] a social service outreach through the Right to Food programme for non privileged students, and [iii] promoting Gandhian values by organizing events around Mahatma Gandhi’s life and philosophy viz. events on Gandhi Jayanti, Martyrs Day, promotion of khadi and handloom, film shows and visits to Gandhian sites.

In the academic year 2015-16, for the Certificate Course on Peace and Conflict Studies: A Gandhian Alternative, Gandhi Study Circle, JDMC organized an International Conference on Peace and Conflict Resolution, on 4th November 2015. Dr. Annika Malmsten Saltin Head, Department of Languages, Literature and Intercultural Studies, Karlstad University, Sweden and Dr. Ashild Kolas, from the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), Norway presented their views on international and interpersonal conflict and had a lively interaction with students and faculty.

The Gandhi Study Circle JDMC got a grant from the Gandhi Bhawan to hold a Seminar and Photography Competition on the theme “Living Together: Respect vs. Tolerance”, on 24th February 2016. Two noted scholars Prof. Apoorvanand and Dr. Dilip Simeon illuminated the students on the topic.

The GSC-JDMC also held a Series of Talks and Presentations that underlined the continued relevance of Gandhi’s moral and political philosophy. The following distinguished scholars enriched us with their lectures and interactive sessions:

  • ‘Gandhi: An Introduction’ by Dr. Anil Dutta Mishra, Director, National Gandhi Museum and Library, New Delhi, 19th August, 2015,
  • ‘Peace and conflict: An Introduction’ by Dr. Uttam Kumar Sinha, Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses’, New Delhi, 26th September 2015
  • ‘Gandhi and the Communal Question’ by Dr. Satish Kumar Jha,  Aryabhatta College, University of Delhi, 14th October 2015
  • ‘Gandhi in Our Times: Navigating Contradictions, Understanding Relevance’ Mohd. Zubair Ahmad, JDM College, University of Delhi, 20th February 2016

On Gandhi Jayanti, the GSC organized a lecture and an intra-college debate competition in the premise of the college library. On this occasion, Prof. Aditya Nigam delivered a lecture on ‘Gandhi, Technology and Modernity’. More than ten teams participated and spoke on the topic ‘Gandhi vs Ambedkar.’ The Martrys Day was observed through the screening of the film Hey Ram, and the students of the GSC were asked to review the film. In SYMPHONY 2016, to promote artisanal craft and handloom work, the GSC collaborated with Ruaab-SEWA to put a stall for its products named Loom Mool known for ethnic fashion. The stall did brisk sales and the initiative was much appreciated by faculty and students. During the mid semester break, the GSC students are scheduled to visit the Gandhi Smriti Darshan Samitiat Rajghat.

The ‘Right to Food’ programme is a unique social service outreach initiative of the GSC-JDMC since its inception. The GSC-JDMC has collaboration with MCKS- Food for Hungry Foundation, for this initiative, through which needy students are provided one free meal a day to take care of their nutritional requirements. In the year 2015-16, 17 visually handicapped students associated with the Equal Opportunities Cell and 5 students from the Sports Departments were supported through this programme.

Social Club -
Dance Club -

Nupur, is the Indian Classical Dance Society of Janki Devi Memorial College, which comprises of students across the various departments. The Society aims at bringing an interaction and participation between the student-members who are trained in the different forms, schools/gharanas of Indian Classical Dance and to impart the resultant knowledge and practice to the entire college. The Society is committed to the development and continuity of the rich cultural heritage and sophisticated art forms of Indian Classical Dance.

The cultural activities of Nupur commenced with the very beginning of the academic year, where the members collaborated in the conceptualization, choreography and execution of a performance for the Founder’s Day celebrations on 5th August 2014. Highlighting the theme of ‘Colours of Peace’ the performance focused on the binary of creativity-violence/srishti-samhaar in Indian aesthetics and the myths of Lord Shiva as the creator/destroyer in the forms of Nataraja and Neelkanth

The Activity Week (8-12th September 2014) allotted to Nupur was organized over a variety of events spread over five days, aimed at guiding the students to engage with critical issues of Indian Classical Dance in contemporary times. On 8th September, a lecture-demonstration was conducted by Kathak and Dhrupad exponent, Ms Namrata Pamnani. She discussed the folk and classical origins of Kathak, and its transformation through time, stressing on the social role played by dance in endowing the life of the audience with more richer emotions. She demonstrated her lecture with a performance of a classical piece on non-violence choreographed by her. On 9th September Gulbahar Singh‘s documentary, Gotipua was screened. Gotipua, one of the oldest dance forms of Orissa, is on the verge of extinction due to lack of patronage, and is today found only in some villages of Orissa. The dance form is associated with only young boys who attired in the female costume perform in the feminine style. It is not merely an art form but a lifestyle around which the lives of these young boys are constructed. The Gotipua, alongwith the Mahari tradition are the precursors of the Odissi dance form. As the Gotipua dancers grow up, increasing masculinity and decreasing monetary returns force them to shift to Odissi. On 10th September, the film Dance Like a Man, directed by Pamela Rooks, starring Shobhana, Arif Zakaria and Anoushka Shankar, and based on the play by Mahesh Dattani, was screened. The film centers on the difficulties faced by classical dancers in India, caught in the crisscrossed lines of tradition and modernity. It shows with remarkable empathy the contradictions of being a male Indian classical dancer. In addition, the film also touches upon several social issues prevalent in modern times such as caste and ethnic discrimination, gender inequality, freedom of occupation, family and professional jealousies. On 11th September, a training session was held for beginners in the two dance forms of Kathak and Bharatanatyam. The session provided a platform for dance enthusiasts who wished to take a “trial run” before considering formal training. Students were taught the basic hand and feet movements as well as the nuances of classical dance. The student-members of Nupur also gave advice regarding suitable centres for training. The event saw participation from all three years and different departments of the college. On 12th September an Abhinaya Workshop was organized for the members of Nupur. It was conducted by Ms Priya Srinivasan, a Bharatanatyam exponent, trained under Leela Samson of the Kalakshetra Foundation. With the help of a power- point presentation, she discussed the nine emotions or rasas of abhinaya and then demonstrated the different nayikas and nayakas as they are performed in classical dance. She encouraged the students to create their own way of expressing different situations which they performed at the end of the session.

Foregrounding ‘Colours of Peace’, the theme for Symphony 2014-15, the members of Nupur conceptualized and choreographed a dramatized dance performance of Kalidasa’s Ritusamhaara. The symmetry of six seasons, colours, ragas, talas, bhavas and rasas was woven into the coexistence and harmony of movements of classical dance, which was performed in the Inaugural programme on 4th February 2015.

On 5th February 2015, Nupur, the solo inter-college Indian Classical dance competition was organized, under Symphony. The competition was judged by Ms Namrata Pamnani, a Kathak and Dhrupad exponent, and Ms Sreyasi Gopinath, a Bharatanatyam and Nattuvangam exponent.

The students have participated at solo classical dance competitions at various inter-college and university events, and have been awarded at many of them. Two student-members of Nupur participated in the solo classical dance competition at Antardhwani, the University of Delhi’s Cultural Festival, among which one was awarded the Special Appreciation award. Students also received the Third Prize at competitions organised by Hindu College and Kamla Nehru College. Special mention is also made of a student who has performed at the Nadaneerajanam event at the Tirumala Sri Venkateswara Temple.

WSDC in collaboration with INFORDS (India Foundation for Rural Development Studies) organized a lecture by Parry Aftab on Internet safety, cyber crime and measures to address such crimes that include cyber-bullying, trolling, cyber-terrorism, child pornography, identity-theft and so forth. Parry Aftab is one of the world's first cyber-lawyers who in her various capacities has worked tirelessly to establish best practices on the internet, extending help to nations that are grappling with the menace of cyber-crimes and educating people the world over how to be forewarned and what steps to take not only to curb such crimes but to protect oneself against the dangers lurking in cyber-space. What was initially planned as a lecture at JDMC turned out to be an extremely fruitful interactive session with Parry Aftab responding to students' questions, of which there was a flood, and giving valuable suggestions.

Parry Aftab's visit was a bonanza for students as she declared her intention to recruit students of Janki Devi College for the India Chapter of her worldwide initiative to secure internet safety for netizens. The process has already been set in motion and students are preparing to get busy designing plans to address the issue of cyber-crime and help Parry's initiative.

INFORDS also has expressed its desire to choose interns from JDMC to work with them on rural development plans. INFORDS is primarily a research organization comprising media professionals, cooperatives, NGOs, educational institutions and committed individuals dedicated to the development of India's villages. Infrastructure: They are known for their flower gardens they'll also mention this on your first day. Canteen is okay-ish. Water tanks sometimes didn't work. Only the washrooms of the third flood were clean. They have an open theater. (Not the best place to hangout in extreme weathers in my opinion.) Air conditioned library. (Advantageous for people who sit close to it).

Dear student,

All the UG and PG degree courses at Janki Devi Memorial College are offered in the full-time and regular mode of learning. Classes are held on the campus and the semester exams are also conducted in the offline mode. For the 2022-23 session, the college offered certain online added certification courses. These were its Acupressure add-on course, Ancient Technique of Acupressure Level 1 and Ancient Technique of Acupressure Level 5. These Janki Devi Memorial College courses were offered in the form of online recorded presentations and lectures. However, if you are looking for a full-time degree course, then you will have to opt for on-campus classes.

Hope this helps!
