About Sikkim Manipal University
The Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), formerly known as the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical, and Technological Sciences, was founded on November 15, 1992, as a result of an agreement between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Pai Foundation to provide exemplary education and health care services in Sikkim and across the country. It is the country's first-ever Public-Private Partnership in higher education and health care. There are two campuses at the university. The Medical and Technology campuses. The government of Sikkim provides a grant of Rs 2.25 crore per annum for the hospital, against which CRH offers free treatment to BPL families and concessional treatment to other state residents. The Sikkim Manipal University was established in 1995 vide the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act (Act No. 9 of 1995). The University Grants Commission recognizes SMU under Section 2 (f) of the UGC Act, 1956, vide letter No. F.9-7/96(CPP-I) dated December 9, 1998, and approved by the Government of India.
The Sikkim Manipal University courses are run by the university are approved by regulatory bodies like the Medical Council of India (MCI), Nursing Council of India, Indian Association of Physiotherapy, All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), and Distance Education Council. The university offers a blend of new age and conventional courses. The new age courses are known as Job Ready Degrees. Sikkim Manipal University Job Ready Degrees are BTech and BBA. Sikkim Manipal University admissions are based on the overall merit and performance of the students in the entrance exams.

The application fee for SMU is INR 500. Students can pay this fee online via net banking, credit/debit card, UPI, etc.
Sikkim Manipal University Eligibility Criteria for 2024
- The eligibility criteria for UG courses at Sikkim Manipal University is an equivalent degree from any recognized university or senior secondary (10+2) or equivalent in any discipline from any recognized Board.
- The eligibility criteria for MBA at SMU is a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university or institute with a minimum of 50% marks. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university and three years of supervisory, managerial, or professional experience are also eligible.
- Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university with a minimum of 50% in aggregate to be eligible for admission to the B.A. Program.
- Eligibility for the preparatory course at Sikkim Manipal University is class 10 and class 12.
For MBA Admissions
- Selection Criteria: Candidates will be selected based on performance in the Management Aptitude Test (MAT)/(CAT)/University Entrance Test. Candidates should apply to SMIT on the prescribed form quoting their MAT/ CAT/ University Entrance Test Score. Candidates will be selected based on their performance in Group Discussions and Interviews.
- Eligibility Criteria: Students must have a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree from a recognized university, or a bachelor’s degree with three years of supervisory/ managerial/ professional experience or a professional degree in engineering/ technology/ medicine/ architecture/ law or a professional qualification in accountancy/ cost and work accounting/ company secretaryship, etc.
For MCA Admissions
- Selection Criteria: SMU Entrance test or competitive examination
- Eligibility Criteria: Passed B.C.A./B.Sc. (Computer Science)/B.Sc. (IT)/B.E.(CSE)/B. Tech (CSE)/B.E.(IT)/B. Tech. (IT) or equivalent Degree.
- Or passed any graduation degree preferably Mathematics at 10+2 level or at Graduation level.
- Obtained 50% marks in the qualifying examination.
For B. Tech Admissions
- Selection Criteria: SMU Entrance examination or any competitive examination like JEE and SMIT online test.
- Eligibility Criteria: 10+2 /Equivalent with 45% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
- Candidate with a diploma in an appropriate branch of engineering awarded by a state Board of Technical Education, and with at least 50% in aggregate in the diploma is also eligible for admission to BTech Curriculum (B. Tech L.E.).
For PhD. Admissions
- Selection Criteria: Clearing of entrance test is only one of the prerequisites for admission
- Eligibility Criteria: Have a Master’s degree from this University or its equivalent from another recognized University or Institute with a minimum of 55% marks. The degree should be relevant to the department to which he/she applied for a PhD in the case of candidates holding a qualifying degree from foreign Universities registration for the PhD will be confirmed after the determination of equivalence by the relevant university body.

Sikkim Manipal University Campus
SMU offers a wide range of course-related amenities. The classrooms are really good, but there is a large library where you expand your knowledge. Food is offered in the canteen, and you can also purchase food outside of campus.
Sikkim Manipal University Infrastructure
The primary library at SMU, Gangtok is magnificent. It has an excellent collection of 58816 books, 18997 titles, and 2500 periodicals, as well as the following services: leading service, reference service, database searching, digital library, book bank service, question banks service, current awareness service, CD Rom and DVDs, reprographic service, newspaper clippings, Internet service, and Wi-Fi, Library internet service. EPAC is also available in the library.
The university features four hostels, two for boys and two for females, each with its own restroom, night canteen, lift, and other amenities. Boys and girls have their own mess and canteen, which serves vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals, as well as a food court for everyone.

Sikkim Manipal University provides several undergraduate courses via distance learning and regular full-time learning. Admission to SMU Undergraduate programs is based on merit in the qualifying examination. Regular UG courses last three years, and many other courses last 4 years.
