It offers a variety of law courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, but all of these courses are taught on-campus. The Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University was established in 1997 by the Tamil Nadu Government under the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University Act, 1996. It is a public state university in the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Recognised by University of Chennai. It has NAAC accreditation. It is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the Association of Commonwealth Universities in the United Kingdom, and the Indian Institute of Public Administration in New Delhi.
