Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla was established in 2016 under the Himachal Pradesh National Law University Act 2016 by the State Government. It is situated in Ghandal, Himachal Pradesh. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Bar Council of India (BCI). The university is ranked 5th by the CLAT Cutoff List. The HPNLU course admissions are offered in the discipline of law at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and, doctoral levels. The popular courses include BA LLB (Hons), BBA LLB (Hons), LLM, and, PhD. The campus is spread over 10 acres of land and is equipped with amenities like libraries, hostels for boys and girls, and, medical facilities, to name a few. The admission to the BA LLB (Hons), BBA LLB (Hons), and, LLM courses are done on the basis of the scores attained by students in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The HPNLU course admissions to the recently introduced MBA in Corporate Law course are merit-based. The PhD admission is based on the results of the Entrance Test conducted by the university each year. The details about the admission for various courses are mentioned below:

The placement-related activities at the university are carried out by the Placement Committee. The committee has a set procedure in place for the placement drive. The detailed process for the HPNLU Shimla placement is mentioned below:
Step 1: The Placement Cell sends the Placement Brochure and other relevant information to the potential recruiters. Any organisation/company or recruiter interested in the recruitment may contact the cell at: placement@hpnlu.ac.in
Step 2: Pre-Placement Discussions (PPD) are held. This helps students to know about the potential recruiters. This will also help the recruiters to go across all details about the students.
Step 3: The Pre-Interview Screening Process is held at this stage of the Himachal Pradesh National Law University placement. This involves the screening process prior to the final interview. It may be a group discussion or any other parameter as decided by the recruiter after discussion with the Coordinator of the placement Cell.
Step 4: As one of the last steps, the Final Interview is held. The students who get selected on the basis of the screening process are called for interviews. A waitlist of students, if needed, may be prepared to use in case of failure of appearance in interviews by screened candidates.
Step 5: The final intimation of offers is done in the last stage. The recruiter has to send the offer letter for the HPNLU Shimla placement to the students through the Placement Cell only.
The Himachal Pradesh National Law University is located in the Ghandal District of Shimla. The campus is spread over lush green land of 10 acres in the foothills of the Himalayas. The various facilities of the HPNLU campus are mentioned below:
HPNLU Hostel Facilities: The university has separate hostels for boys and girls. The girls block for hostels has been newly constructed whereas the boys hostel will be ready for accommodation by December 2022. There is a mess facility for each hostel block. The rooms of the HPNLU hostel are furnished with beds, study tables, chairs, and almirahs. Proper sanitation and hygiene is maintained in the hostel and the mess premises along with 24/7 wi-fi connectivity. Transportation is provided for the residents of the hostels. For the safety and security of hostel inmates, each hostel has security guards.
HPNLU Medical Facilities: The campus has extensive first-aid facilities for staff and students and medical care is provided through Government Hospital, Dhami, which is within 3 km from the University Campus.
HPNLU Shimla Sports Facilities: For recreational as well as sports purposes, the campus has an open badminton court, and indoor sports room like a gymnasium room, table tennis room, etc. A huge sports ground for various outdoor games is under construction.
HPNLU Library Facilities: The campus has a central library which functions as the primary Information Resource Centre and Repository of printed and Electronic Resources. The library has extensive law resources in the form of books and publications. E-Access to the library resources is also facilitated. The operations of the library are automated using the “Koha” library management software. This helps students to easily access and locate the desired stacks of books.
The Himachal Pradesh National Law University offers various scholarships to its students on a merit as well as a need basis. The HPNLU Shimla scholarship details are given below:
Merit-Cum-Means Scholarships: To be eligible for this scholarship, students must have qualified for all the papers in the previous class. They must have a minimum of 70% attendance. For first year students, the merit of the CLAT exam will be considered. The income tax return of the parents for the last 3 years must be submitted along with the HPNLU scholarship form. The family income of the parents must be less than 2.5 lakh per annum. The amount for this scholarship concession will be 25% of the tuition fee to be paid to the university. One scholarship will be granted to a differently-abled student, and 2 will be granted to LLM students out of which one must be a girl student.
HDFC Scholarship for Professional Students 2023-24: This is one of the recent HPNLU scholarships. This is open for students who are currently pursuing professional graduation courses like B.Tech, BA LLB, MBBS, etc. Candidates must have attained a minimum of 60% marks in the previous qualifying examination to apply for the scholarship. The annual family income must be below Rs 6,00,000 combined from all courses. Special consideration will be given to girl students for this scholarship.
National Scholarship Portal: Students can also apply for various scholarships from the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). This is to be done through the official website of NSP which is scholarships.gov.in.
State Scholarships: To apply for the various scholarships offered by the states, students must visit the respective websites of their states. Filling out the HPNLU scholarship form is still a must.
The Himachal Pradesh National Law University course admissions are offered in the field of Law. The university offers courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and, doctoral levels. The popular courses offered are BA LLB (Hons), and BBA LLB (Hons), which are five-year integrated courses. LLM is offered at the postgraduate level and is one year programme. Apart from this, PhD is offered at the doctoral level.
One of the recent additions to the HPNLU Shimla courses is the MBA in Corporate Law course. The admission to the BA LLB (Hons), BBA LLB (Hons), and, LLM courses are based on the scores of the CLAT exam. For the PhD admission, the university conducts its own entrance test each year. The BA LLB (Hons) and BBA LLB (Hons) courses are Five-Year Integrated Programmes, comprising courses in Law, Management and Social Sciences. For the BBA LLB (Hons) course, Economics is the ‘major’ course. Under the BA LLB (Hons) programme, students have the option to choose one from, Economics, Political Science, and Sociology, as their ‘major’ courses.
