Petroleum engineers specialise in the study and discovery of natural reservoirs and petroleum deposits located deep inside the earth. The four-year programme covers the study of discovering and locating these reservoirs and deposits.
Petroleum engineers are expected to locate oil reservoirs and once these reservoirs are located, the study and examine the geological formation, nature of rock containing the reservoir with the help of other geologists to determine the drilling method required for extraction.
Designing and developing effective and cost-efficient technology to extract these petroleum resources is one of the elemental parts of the job of petroleum engineers. Also, they monitor the drilling process and ensure that the resources are extracted safely and stored properly.

The eligibility criteria for the B.Tech Petroleum Engineering programme is similar to other B.Tech programmes. The basic eligibility criteria which the candidates must fulfil are:
Candidates must have completed their Class XII studies (or equivalent) from any recognised Board in Science stream.
It is compulsory for the candidates to have studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics mandatorily at the qualifying exam level to be eligible for the B.Tech Petroleum Engineering program.
The candidates should also have secured a minimum aggregate of 55% or above in the qualifying level.
Candidates with a 3-year diploma in a relevant discipline are also eligible for the B.Tech Petroleum Engineering course.
Admission into the 4-year B.Tech Petroleum Engineering programme is done both on the basis of merit and entrance exam scores. In the entrance exam process, the candidates can appear in any national-level, state-level or institute-level entrance examination like JEE Main/Advanced, WBJEE, etc and secure valid marks or a valid rank. Based on the rank or entrance exam score, a counselling process is conducted (institute-level or national-level) and thereafter final allocation of seats is done.
Some institutes also offer direct admission into the B.Tech Petroleum Engineering programme where the qualifying exam scores, i.e the HSC exam scores are taken into consideration and a merit list is prepared. Based on the merit list, suitable candidates are offered admissions.
Admission Process Highlights
