Upon entering the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), you might feel like stepping into the ‘Hogwarts of India’, as it lands you in a magical world of research. Popularly known as IISc Bangalore, it is located in the ‘Silicon Valley of India’, Bengaluru. The 400-acre lush green residential campus comprises well-maintained vintage architecture and modern facilities.
IISc Bangalore is famous for offering research-based courses in science and technology. It was founded to offer postgraduate and doctoral courses such as M.Tech, M.Sc, M.Des, M.Mgt and PhD. However, IISc Bangalore courses are also offered at the UG level: B.Sc (Research) and B.Tech (Mathematics and Computing). Moreover, its robust academia, top-notch research facilities, highly experienced faculty and ample exposure opportunities are a testament to its being the top university in India by NIRF.
IISc Bangalore is considered the least controversial, ragging-free and politics-free university as per student reviews. The impressive ratio of 7:93 for the students hailing from Bangalore to other states of India shows the popularity of the university. IISc Bangalore is the first choice for science students aspiring to pursue higher studies in research in India. However, the atmosphere of IISc can make students lonely and stressful as it demands rigorous dedication and focus.
IISc Bangalore has been ranked the top university in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023 Rankings. It also featured in the 2nd position under the overall category in the rankings. Also, it has successfully maintained constant rankings for more than 3 years. That’s really impressive!

Our Take:
Maintaining 1st position in university category and 2nd position in overall category of NIRF ranking for three consecutive years is a remarkable achievement for the university. This is a testament to the high-quality education and research facilities it offers to the students.
The university opens doors for students into the field of research and discovery! IISc Bangalore offers a robust curriculum and courses under 6 departments, Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Electronics and Computer Science, Interdisciplinary Sciences, Mechanical Sciences, Physical and Mathematical Sciences and various centres and societies.
Based on students’ reviews, IISc Bangalore’s curriculum is a perfect blend of theoretical and applied approaches. Students are given multi-disciplinary education in the initial semesters and project work in the final semester. It follows a credit system which requires students to obtain certain credits divided into assignments, practicals, projects and internships. Moreover, the university has an 80% strict attendance policy.
Students have praised IISc Bangalore credit and audit facility that provides academic freedom to them to find their interests. Also, the flexible research timings allow students to pursue research at their own pace and convenience. As the university offers a broad scope for academia, it ensures the pursuit of academic excellence by the students. However, sometimes students may feel intimidated by the level of dedication IISc requires!
According to the NIRF report 2023, the batch size of 2021-22 was 1661 which is not so large.

We connected with a lot of students and all commended the IISc Bangalore placement numbers and packages offered. Leading recruiters such as Amazon, Cisco, SAP, AMD, Dell, Sony, Pay U and Nvidia recruit students across the courses.
Our Take
It is evident that IISc Bangalore offers promising internship and placement opportunities to students. The high stipend and salary packages reflect IISc’s class and standard of education. Along with placements, the university also gives equal importance to internships. However, placement is the second priority for students here.
The diverse student body of IISc Bangalore consists of 93% of students hailing from outside Karnataka. However, the gender ratio at IISc leans heavily towards males (85%) vs females (15%), resulting in 17:3, as per NIRF Report 2023. Let’s inspect the IISc Bangalore's demographics in detail.

Our Take:
It is evident from the report that IISc Bangalore stands apart. Though the presence of international students is small but adds to the diversity of the student body. On the other hand, the dearth of a balanced gender ratio can be paid attention to. The male students outnumber the female student population across all courses but this isn't a matter of concern for the potential students looking to get enrolled here.
IISc Bangalore has one of the most experienced and dedicated faculty in India. They are highly praised for their knowledge and commitment towards education and students’ growth. There are 482 faculty members according to the NIRF 2023 report.
The faculty of IISc Bangalore is highly knowledgeable, passionate and experts in their fields. They motivate students to ask questions and gain in-depth knowledge. Additionally, the faculty, administration and management are extremely student-friendly. They listen to student queries and behave professionally.
Our Take:
Faculty is the stem of any educational institution and IISc has one of the best! The faculty is always there to help students and solve their queries. This is the reason why the best research scholars in India are produced by IISc Bangalore.
The Indian Institute of Science is located at CV Raman Avenue, Bengaluru, Karnataka. First-time visitors can reach the IISc campus by public transport using its popular name in the city, Tata Institute. The nearest bus stop to the campus is the APSRTC Bus stand. The City Railway Station is the nearest railway station around 7 km from the campus. The nearest airport, Kempegowda International Airport, is about 40 km from the university which is only an hour's drive. However, no matter what the distance is, Bengaluru’s traffic will stretch it further.
IISc Bangalore totally meets and exceeds the expectations of the students. Any student who is a hard-core lover of academics and research can choose the university without a doubt. However, if you are not really interested in research, you should not choose IISc just because it’s the best. The university demands dedication, high level of passion and motivation to pursue academics. Hence, producing the desired result can be much more difficult than getting in!

Overall: Admission to the B. Sc. program at IISc Bangalore takes place via 4 modes: JEE Mains, JEE Advanced, IAT and NEET. Till 2021 there was a KVPY mode of entry but it was replaced by IAT (IISER Aptitude test) since last year. Cutoffs for different categories via different exams canbe checked at official website of the UG department of IISC: bs-ug.iisc.ac.in. Infrastructure: The college has a very vibrant social life. There are 2 fests held across the year. The first fest is RHAPSODY, the annual fest of IISc held inseptember of every year. It includes several concert Apart from that, several smaller libraries like Ranade library are found in departments. There are several music, dance and educational clubs on campus which regularly host events and competitions. There are regular club meetings and academic excursions which make laerning fun.
Faculty: The internship opportunities are open second year onwards and are very easy to obtain. Two types of internships are available: industrial and academic. Academic internships involve working under a professor with his team on their project over the course of a summer break. For this the student can approach any professors on campus, or even at other universities in India or abroad. However, these internships generally do not involve any stipends. Industrial internships are provided by the campus placement cell and generally involve a stipend depending on the job you get. Several companies come on campus to take interns for industrial research training.
Hostel: The hostel facilities provided by the campus are top notch. The hostels have been divided into blocks, with UG students being assigned E block, U block and S block. The rooms are well equipped with beds, fans, cupboards, and lights. The rooms in E block are twin sharing, while single occupancy rooms are available in U & S block. Room allotment is random. The hostels are assigned on the first day of coming to campus and are very cheap at 5000 per month. The hostels are located at a central location of the campus so that classrooms are nearby. The food provided at the campus is ofexcellent quality. There are 5 messes A and B be North Indian veg and North Indian non veg, C and D being South Indian veg and South Indian nonveg, and E mess providing a composite diet. The menus are decided by a mess committee elected from the students by the students. 4 meals are provided everyday, breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. Special items are made on festivals, dessert and beverages are there.
Overall: overall experience of mine in the institute is nice because teachers are very helpful hostel facility is given which is average in nature and infrastructure of this institute is well maintained and yes i have got some good friends
Placement: if I talk about placement given from this college, please meet opportunities are less as compare to the number of students studying here , only few companies visits here to take students
Infrastructure: if I talk about overall infrastructure of this institute I can say that infrastructure is average, huge ground for sports is there and also there is space for cultural activities and the campus is also built very good
Faculty: one of the best part of this institute is they have the best faculty there well knowledgeable well qualified teachers who not only motivate you but also supports you in each and every step of the your college life
Hostel: hostel facility of this college is quite simple and nice food served here are good quality cleanliness is maintained here hygiene is also maintain here and also washrooms are cleaned in every 3 days
Overall: Quality of placement is average. 40 % percentage of student were placed approx. 4-5 lac highest salary package offered. average salary they offered 2.5 -3.5lac per annum. yes placement process easy and pleasant to me and they are supportive
Infrastructure: colleges provide basic amenities .They provide all facility which is necessary for every student such as library ,classroom, lab etc. but only problem is that canteen and classroom need to more improvement. Internet connection is very bad (network problem). they have to take action regarding cleanliness in canteen area.
Overall: This college is already well known for it's reputation. The college atmosphere is more serious compared to IIT since greater number of Masters and PhD students. I think I don't need to say anything about academic part. The food is great, better than all IIT. You can choose your mess based on the region of India you come from. Hostels are decent. Campus is great.
Placement: A major portion of the students don't look up to placements since they join foreign universities for higher studies. Although placements are great and major companies come to have the cream of the country.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure is the best in India you can find. Every type of labs and workplaces. New infra are also being built. Also has the best library with huge collection of books and journals.
Faculty: You know the best professors of India come to IISc. They will be better than any other colleges. On a key note, good in research does not imply good at teaching. So in some courses you might get a good researcher as your prof but he might not be that good at teaching. But don't worry as there will be your nerdy friends to help you out.
Hostel: The undergraduate students get decent hostels. The best hostels are given to the PhD and Masters students. New hostels are being built, after which I think the hostel problem will be resolved. Also the institute increased intake in recent years, so there is a bit of lack of accommodation. So small personal rooms are being shared by two persons, which is not the worse but is pretty bad.
Overall: Good so better of the this college dheko everyone use this opportunity to avoid your problems and so better the this website of college dheko please all of use this opportunity
Overall: Pros : Excellent Faculty Good Exposure and Brand Value of an IISCian Inclination Towards research Motivational Students High Value for Education Value for Money and Good Placement Cons: Highly Competitive Too many projects Loads of Stress Excessive Assignments Getting out is much more difficult than getting in.
Overall: All the professors at IISC, Bangalore are more than willing to help if you have doubts regarding a question or a potential hypothesis. And there are courses catering to specific topics like microscopy, NMR, protein sequencing which include both theory and practicals.
Overall: One thing is for sure, IISc is a great place for learning - advanced facilities in equipment in all fields of research, great journals Library, provision to take an elective course in any department ( as Electrical Engg student, I took 50% of courses in Chemistry, Physics, ECE, Instrumentation, & Management depts for my specialization on LEDs), and possibility for cross-disciplinary research pursuits.
