Shree Somnath Sanskrit University was established as a public university in Gujarat on April 1, 2005. The university was established for research and teaching of Sanskrit literature by the Gujarat State government in 2005. The university is home to 110 affiliated colleges and research institutes across Gujarat. Shree Somnath Sanskrit University courses include UG, PG, PhD, and M.Phil. The university is recognised by Union Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an A+ grade. Shree Somnath Sanskrit University has signed an MoU with Heidelberg University, Wurzburg University, and Leipzig University.

Shree Somnath Sanskrit University admission to most of the courses is merit-based. However, candidates must appear for the entrance exam for admission to the M.Phil programme. Applications for admission may be downloaded from the website and submitted along with the required application fees. The university also offers scholarships like the digital Gujarat post-matric scholarship, etc. In addition, the candidate may also avail Shree Somnath Sanskrit University scholarship offered by the Government of Gujarat.

The university also provides a variety of degree, diploma, and certificate programmes such as yoga, spoken Sanskrit, temple administration, paurohitya, jyotisha, vastu stra, and a post-graduate diploma in computer applications. These courses are offered through the affiliated 110 colleges. Shree Somnath Sanskrit University campus offers various amenities to its students, such as a library, gymnasium, sports facilities, canteen, hostel, etc.
