Formally known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering, VNIT changed its name to Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology in 2007 after the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007. The institute was established in the year 1960 as a public engineering institute. In 2002, VNIT Nagpur was granted deemed-to-be-university status by the UGC. Spread across an area of 214 acres, the institute holds its place among the top engineering institutes in Nagpur. The institute has also been approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) and accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

VNIT Nagpur courses are offered at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. The courses are offered by the institute in the Engineering & Technology, Architecture, and Science streams. VNIT Nagpur's popular courses include BTech, MTech, BArch, MSc, and PhD. The BTech courses are available in multiple disciplines, including Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, CSE, ECE, Mechanical Engineering, etc. The total course fee for BTech at VNIT Nagpur is INR 5,48,000, and the total course fee for MTech at VNIT Nagpur is INR 3,35,000.

However, just like every other institute, not everything about VNIT Nagpur is perfect. If the review of students is to be believed, there is no internship available for the students. Even if someone gets an internship, there is no stipend provided. Moreover, the faculty of this institute also do not have a good reputation. As per the students, most of the professors at VNIT Nagpur are mediocre and not very experienced. Due to this, sometimes students have to rely on self-study.

VNIT Nagpur has been ranked 41st under the Engineering category and 82nd under the overall categories as per NIRF 2023. It has also been placed 12th among architecture institutes in India. If we compare it with previous years' rankings, VNIT Nagpur has improved its ranking in the overall category in 2023, moving from 101 to 82. It has also maintained its ranking in the Engineering category at 41. In the Architecture category, it has slipped from 8 to 12.

Curriculum Design

The Academic Rule Book is made available to all students and is also available on the institute's website. Academic Peer Review of each academic programme is conducted with the help of faculty members from IITs, IISc, SPA, etc. The suggestions received under this review programme are implemented through the respective Boards of Studies. Formal accreditation of various academic programmes is done with the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). Five B.Tech and five M.Tech programmes are already accredited.

Academic Evaluation

All the programmes at VNIT Nagpur are conducted on a semester basis. Students need to register for courses each semester before the exam. Courses are categorised into 3 categories: core, elective open, and humanities courses. Course evaluation at the institute is primarily based on two sessional tests, an end-semester examination, and class assessments. Laboratory course evaluation is done on a continuous basis through quizzes, assignments, seminars, etc.

VNIT Nagpur uses a relative credit point-based grading system on a ten-point scale. Grades are awarded based on assessment, and there is no provision for improving grades by re-registering in the course. Students who receive an FF (fail grade) in a course must re-register for it in the subsequent semester.

Student performance is indicated by CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average). Students are not awarded any divisions or percentages. A student is eligible for the award of a degree after completing all requirements set by the institute in terms of credits, CGPA, and type of courses completed.

VNIT offers a total of 2 UG programmes (BTech and BArch) and 2 PG programmes (MTech and MSc). A total of 8 specialisations are offered under the BTech programme; a total of 20 specialisations are offered under the MTech programme; and a total of 3 specialisations are offered under the MSc programme.

Admission Process

VNIT Nagpur admission to BTech and BArch courses is done through the JEE Main counselling process conducted by JoSAA. Admission to the MTech programmes at VNIT Nagpur is done through the GATE exam. The JAM entrance exam is conducted to shortlist candidates for admission to the MSc programmes.

VNIT Nagpur is a large and well-established engineering and architecture institute. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in engineering, architecture, and science.  The need to qualify for tough entrance exams like IIT JAM, JEE Main, or GATE shows that it is a selective institute, and admission is competitive. However, VNIT Nagpur has a limited number of seats, which makes admission even more competitive.

VNIT Nagpur has well-equipped classrooms with all the necessary amenities, such as comfortable seats, projectors, and whiteboards. The classrooms are spacious and well-lit, providing a conducive environment for learning.

VNIT Nagpur has a number of auditoriums and seminar halls of varying capacities. These facilities are used for hosting lectures, seminars, workshops, and other events.

Labs:

VNIT Nagpur has state-of-the-art laboratories for all of its departments. The laboratories are well-equipped with the latest equipment and software, providing students with hands-on experience in their field of study.

Library:

VNIT Nagpur has a well-stocked library with a wide range of books, journals, and other resources. The library also has a number of digital resources, such as e-books and online databases.

Internet:

VNIT Nagpur has a high-speed internet network that is available to all students and faculty. The internet network is used for academic purposes, as well as for personal use.

Hostel:

VNIT Nagpur provides comfortable hostel services for over 1,000 students. It has 11 separate hostels (7 for boys and 4 for girls). Each hostel has basic amenities such as a phone, TV, sports equipment, water coolers, and water heaters. It also has a well-equipped mess serving both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals. It's mandatory for students to opt for the hostel's mess, which is managed by a student committee.

VNIT Nagpur has a number of cafes and hang-out places where students can relax and socialise. These places also offer a variety of food and drinks at reasonable prices.

Our Take

As per our evaluation of the infrastructure, VNIT Nagpur has a well-developed infrastructure that meets the needs of its students and faculty. The institute provides its students with a conducive environment for learning and growth. However, as per the reviews of students, the hostel rooms are outdated and below average.

VNIT Nagpur placement report for 2023 has not been released yet. As per the VNIT Nagpur placement report 2022, out of a total of 672 graduating, 669 students were placed from BTech. Our Take

The placement at VNIT Nagpur is good. However, the institute also needs to offer internships to the students with a stipend. However, there are some top recruiters that visit campus for placements, which is a plus point for the institute. The overall placement percentage at the institute stood at above 90% in 2022. BTech median package offered at the institute is also quite impressive, which is a lot higher than the average package offered by other universities.

As per the official data released by the institute, 705 students (477 Male & 228 Female) were admitted in B Tech/B Arch programmes, 327 (267 Male & 60 Female) in M Tech programmes, 54 (35 Male & 19 Female) in M Sc programmes, and 48 (38 Male & 10 Female) in PhD programme last year. Therefore, the overall male-to-female ratio at VNIT Nagpur is 3:1. This means that there are approximately 3 male students for every 1 female student admitted to the institute.

VNIT Nagpur is located in the city of Nagpur, in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is located on a sprawling campus of 214 acres in the western part of the city, near Ambazari Lake. The campus is about 7 kilometres from Nagpur Railway Station and 8 kilometres from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport. VNIT Nagpur is well-connected to other parts of the city by public transportation. There are a number of bus stops and autorickshaw stands located near the campus. The campus is well-connected to the city, which is a good thing.

Also, even though the institute has state-of-the-art facilities and resources in most departments, there are some areas where the infrastructure could be improved, like hostels. VNIT Nagpur does have good opportunities for improving its recruitment process so that only experienced faculty are hired. 

So as per our verdict, VNIT Nagpur is a good institute that offers its students a number of opportunities. However, it is important to note that the institute is competitive and the faculty is mediocre.
