Our Take:

If we analyse the ranking of Mangalore University as granted by some of the top-ranking bodies, candidates willing to study in Mangalore University can opt for admission. However, the fact cannot be ignored that, compared to 2022, there has been a slight dip in the India Today Ranking from 2022 to 2023. In the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, Mangalore University bagged the first position in India in 2021 and was placed in second place in 2022. On the brighter side, it has been ranked under the QS Asia University Rankings 2023 and was placed in the rank band 151-200 in the NIRF Ranking 2023- Engineering category.

Mangalore University Academia and Batch Size

Academic Composition

Mangalore University academia is a mix of classroom learning, assignments, practicals/fieldwork and assessments.

As per the Mangalore University annual report 2021-22, the university has adopted the Credit-Based Semester System at the undergraduate level and the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) for the postgraduate programmes, allowing students the flexibility to select their desired courses.

Apart from that, the report mentions incorporating languages, ability enhancement courses, skill enhancement courses, vocational courses, open electives, project work/internship, sports/cultural, and extension activities focusing on multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary and holistic, value-based education in its curriculum.

Our Take:

The teaching pedagogy at Mangalore University is well-appreciated by the students. They have also voiced that they are offered multiple entry/exit/credit transfer options in the first 3 years for the degree, diploma, and certificate programmes and in the 4th year for Hons. programmes.

The only condition is that certificate programme students can make an exit after finishing 48 credit equivalents, from the UG Diploma programme after completing 96 credits, from the degree programme after reaching 132-140 credits, and from a Bachelor with Honours programme after achieving 176-180 credits. Such options are very helpful for students, allowing them to plan their career graphs accordingly without any restrictions.

Our Take

Compared to other state universities, students have asserted that the fees are reasonable. Providing a separate fee structure for SC/ST students has been helpful for students with financially weak backgrounds, especially those from rural areas. Apart from that, Mangalore University also offers scholarships of INR 6,000 to those students who have performed well in the first-year exam. A final-year student whose family income is less than INR 40,000 per year is offered a scholarship of INR 5,000 on securing the top rank in the first-year exam. Such scholarship schemes encourage unprivileged students to pursue their education.

Our Take:

As per the data mentioned above, in the case of UG courses, the male-to-female ratio of undergraduate students is 63:46. With 46% female percentage, the gender ratio is balanced to some extent. For PG courses, It is evident from the table mentioned above that Mangalore University has more females enrolled as compared to males. However, the percentage of students from outside Karnataka is very less, comprising only 14.1%. It indicates that exposure is limited to some extent.

Mangalore University Faculty and Administration/Management

Mangalore University has seen steady growth in its H-index with 82 points in 2022. Currently, there are 112 faculty members and 442 guest faculty. The student-to-faculty ratio is satisfactory at 31.9%. However, a considerable number of faculty positions are vacant. Here is the quantitative value of vacant faculty posts in the PG departments as per the annual report 2021-22.

Associate Professor

24

Assistant Professor

34

Our Take:

The H-index shows the research output of faculty members and research scholars, and the score obtained by the university clearly signifies the commendable output of its faculty members in the field of research.

Coming to vacant faculty posts, the university has stated in its annual report that a large number of teachers have retired and there have been no recruitments of teaching and non-teaching staff in the past ten years.

Regarding the university administration, students have highlighted that there are loopholes in the functioning of Mangalore University administration and management. To justify the statement, they cited that students need to visit multiple times to ask for their documents. The contact numbers provided on the university website are not updated, making it difficult for students residing in faraway places to contact the university. They further added that receiving mark sheets gets delayed up to 6 months after the university results are announced, causing a lot of inconvenience for the students.

Mangalore University Location

Nestled in Mangalagangothri, Mangalore University is located southeast at a distance of about 20 km from the historic coastal town of Mangalore. Located at a distance of 7km from the campus is the nearest railway station, Mangalore Central Railway Station. Mangaluru International Airport is situated at a distance of 39.4 kilometres from the university campus.

Our Take:

Students have expressed that the environment surrounding the university campus is good. The one issue that the students face is the distance from one academic block to another. Those travelling by public transport need to walk a lot when moving from one department to another.

Mangalore University Expectation vs Reality - CollegeDekho Verdict

Mangalore University is one of the highly-ranked state universities in India. One of the significant aspects of Mangalore University is its effort towards sustainability. Even though, both undergraduate and postgraduate courses are offered, the students enrolled indicate that more emphasis is given to PG courses than UG courses. The fees are reasonable, with comparatively lower fees for SC/ST students. The scholarships available in the final year are a good step to keep students focused on their studies. The considerably high number of vacant faculty positions is a bit of concern given that more students are enrolled than the sanctioned intake. However, the facilities provided to students and the placement statistics both speak in favour of the students.
