65 Research Programme Seats Vacant in JNU, Varsity Confirms Second List

65 Research Programme Seats Vacant in JNU, Varsity Confirms Second List

The Teachers’ Association of Jawaharlal Nehru University pointed that only 74 candidates have joined the research programmes offered by the varsity out of the sanctioned 139 seats. However, the authorities of JNU have confirmed that the admission process is underway and the second list will be announced soon. According to JNU Teachers’ Association, out of 74 students who secured admission in the research programmes, only three students belong to SC and ST categories. The varsity has completely failed to satisfy the constitutional provisions for reservations as well as Central Educational Institutions.

However, Registrar of JNU clarified that the varsity is conducting the admission process as per the procedures laid down in the UGC Gazette Notification 2016. The second list will be released only if all the seats are not filled under the first list.

Jawaharlal Nehru University was in turmoil in the initial months of 2017 as the varsity approved the UGC Gazette notification. Disappointed with massive seat cuts in M.Phil & Ph.D. programmes, the students called for a strike demanding the varsity to roll back the decision. However, the High Court of Delhi clarified that the varsity must follow the procedures and rules of the University Grants Commission.

Recently, the administration of JNU announced that it would reserve 75% of the hostel rooms for the students of North Eastern states in the new hostel that will come up on the campus soon. The foundation stone for the construction of the new hostel building was laid by Minister of State for the Development of North East India Mr. Jitendra Singh. The hostel will be functional after 20 months and the estimated budget for the same is Rs. 29 crore.
