Engineering students of more than 10,000 technical colleges that come under the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will have to undergo a special training course in order to upgrade their communications skills as well as social skills. This initiative has been taken to increase the employability of engineering students by giving them proper grooming.
AICTE has partnered with TCS iON recently to provide an online course to all students which will help them in acquiring basic professional skills. This will prove to be highly beneficial for students when they enter the job market and start their professional ventures.
The Chairman of AICTE, Anil D Sahasrabudhe, said that lack of soft skills has a contribution majorly in low employability of students from engineering and technical colleges. Many students do not know about some basic social and communication skills and some fundamental professional etiquettes like writing an email, preparing for an interview, engaging in a corporate telephonic conversation etc are missing in them. According to Sahasrabudhe, the main reason behind students lacking in these areas is that these general things are not taught in classrooms.

Anil Sahasrabudhe claims that the online course will be helpful in bridging the gap while also introducing students to the professional skillset that they are required to have. He said that every year, TCS hires about 40,000 engineering students and research shows that most of these students lack diversity. The online course has been designed based on feedback and experience that has been collected over the years and it aims at cultivating a highly competent, qualified, and proficient workforce.

The entire course will be of a duration of 20 hours and it will consist of 11 modules that will be based on several professional competencies like corporate etiquettes, group discussions, effective email writing, presentations, interpersonal skills, and much more. The course will be available on the TCS iON Digital Learning Hub.
