Education in India has Become a Commercial Commodity: Former ISRO Chief Madhav Nair

Former Chairman of ISRO or Indian Space Research Organisation has expressed his concern over the dropping quality of education in the country. He felt that students are being spoon-fed and there is no sign of real education nowadays. Most of the educational institutes in the country are relying on scores in memory-based exams rather than inculcating the important concepts among the students, Nair commented.

Nair was of the opinion that the education system had deteriorated considerably, because of which students are not employable after the completion of graduation or engineering. Students who come out with a graduation or engineering degree lack basic skills and majority of them are failing to apply the learnt knowledge in practical applications. He termed the current scenario of the education system as pathetic where many private educational institutes concentrate on increasing the number of students and making money. The education system, according to him, has become merely a commercial commodity.

He further suggested the educational institutes to lay more emphasis on developing communication, analytical and observation skills of the students along with inculcating moral values. The process must start from the primary education so that the foundation is strong. Once the children at the primary level understand the essence of knowledge, they will be acquainted with it and take it further with them. Simply, the educational institutions must show the children the right path of acquiring knowledge at the primary level.

Nair also stated that talented teachers are not taking up profession due to lack of incentives and professional training. The educational institutes must play a significant role in evaluating the teachers periodically and ensure the quality of teaching. He urged the educational institutes to follow the three language formula which includes Hindi, English and the local language.
