Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Bhopal has expelled fifteen second year undergraduate students for scoring below 5 Cumulative Performance Index (CPI). They are barred from admission to the next year.
Several students said that they have been served termination letter after they failed to register themselves for the next session. These students alleged they were never told about any such rule. While the authority from the institute said that they have done everything according to the rule.

Expelled students blamed the institute for playing with their career. A student on anonymity said that they were served a year drop notice by the authorities of the institute for scoring below 5 CPI in the first week of August. They were never informed about it before hand. They came to know about this rule when they went for registration in the next class. They were not allowed for the registration on August 10 which was the last date for registration. Now the authority has served termination notice.
It is only in the mail the authorities of the institute informed the students that they have been terminated for not registering in the next class said the same student.

While the Dean Academic of the institute said in an email that in view of students not registering for 2016-17 I Semester, by the last date stipulated for late registration which was on 10th August 2016, students have been expelled from the academic programme.
However, the students have been asked to appeal to Chairperson of senate IISER Bhopal, citing reasons for failure to register before the deadline. August 30 is the last date for the appeal.
An expelled student said that August 10 was the deadline for registration whereas the institute took 16 days to tell the students about termination. The institute has mentioned non-registration as the reason for termination. When the institute never allowed these students to register how could students get registered?

Several frustrated students have started leaving the campus of the institute . IISER is a research institute and the authority is not ready to understand the impacts of wasting one year. Students cannot keep on fighting with the authorities. Students who could not afford started leaving the campus said another student.
Several students, who have scored above 5 CGPA, come in support of the these expelled students. The authority should give them an opportunity as termination is as very harsh measure said a senior student on the condition of anonymity.
While the Dean Academics said that the decision was taken by a committee according to the rule.
