With an aim to promote and encourage women education, the state government of Karnataka has taken an important decision to bear the entire education expenses of girl students pursuing +2, graduation and post graduation in government colleges across the state. The state cabinet has given its nod for the proposal, and it will be implemented from the current academic session.
The plan to provide free education to girl students, the state government has to spend around Rs. 95 crores annually. At present, close to 3.7 lakh girl students are pursuing +2, UG and PG courses in government colleges across the state. The state government is yet to finalise policies and guidelines for the free education scheme for girl students.

Free education scheme is a great opportunity for the girl students to pursue higher studies without relying on parent’s expenses. The move will encourage women students to pursue PG courses.
Most girl students drop out after UG due to various reasons such as marriage, financial problems, family conditions, and societal issues. The free education scheme will encourage women to cross all the barriers and take up higher studies.

Earlier, the state government of Karnataka announced that it would provide free laptops to 1.5 lakh students pursuing engineering, degree, medical and polytechnic courses across the state. The government has successfully implemented the scheme during the academic session 2018-19.
