A lecture programme on ‘Administration of higher educational institutions: problems and prospects’ was held under the aegis of the Gauhati University Officers’ Association (GUOA) at Gauhati University last week. The meeting was attended by many noted professors and guests from all over the state. Tarun Saikia, President of GUOA, presided over the meeting whereas, Arabinda Sarma, General Secretary, GU, delivered the welcome speech.
In his inaugural speech, Vice Chancellor, Dr Mridul Kumar Hazarika, spoke on the various roles and responsibilities of the officers of higher educational institutions and explained the relevance of discussions on the topic. Dr Nirajana Mahanta, Proffessor, Department of Assamese, and an executive council of the Dibrugarh University, delivered the main speech wherein she highlighted the challenging problems that prevail in the current academic system and the higher educational institutions, colleges in particular. She analysed the administrative lacunae in the institutions and delivered lectures citing examples from her personal experience.
The programme was attended by GU Rector Dr Hariprasad Sarma as the special guest. Other important guests present were Prof Abani Kumar Bhagbati of the Department of Geography, Prof Mohan Chandra Kalita of the Departmet of Biotechnology, and tthe newly elected president of the Gauhati University Teacher’s Association (GUTA) and many more.
The speakers focused on the need of clear rules and regulations, forthrightness of the administrator and transparency in administration.
