Government medical colleges in Bangalore have failed to apply for NIRF Rankings 2019, as they did not satisfy the eligibility criteria prescribed by the HRD Ministry. Only one out of 16 government-funded medical colleges in Bangalore applied for the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2019. Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) has come out as the only government college in the city that is eligible to apply for NIRF.
Every university strives to get accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), but the process happens only once every five years. Therefore, the Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD) introduced NIRF so that colleges, universities or higher educational institutions can get rankings every year. NIRF is parallel to NAAC, and its ranking reflects the annual performance of the institutions that apply for it. At the beginning when NIRF was introduced, its ranking was voluntary but now the HRD Ministry has made it mandatory.
An official from the Medial Education Department addressed the issue and said that the government-run medical colleges are motivated to apply for NIRF ranking, but they failed to meet the criteria because of infrastructural woes. The government will take steps to make more government medical colleges eligible for NIRF Rankings next year, he added.
