The Rank of International Institute of Information Technology - IIIT Hyderabad may be far below than most of the IITs in India, but surprisingly, it offered the B.Tech students with the highest median salaries. The IIIT Hyderabad ranking in NIRF (National Institute Ranking Framework) for the B.Tech colleges is 38, which is lower than the most IITs but the same NIRF Report revealed that the B.Tech graduates from IIIT-H in 2017-18 placement session bagged the highest paying packages.
The report revealed that the IIIT Hyderabad students received salaries around Rs. 20.35 lakh where the top ranking institute IIT Madras received the median salary of Rs. 13.06 lakh in the placement session of 2017-18. The term ‘Median Salary’ signifies the salary in the medium after listing the salaries received by all the students of the institute in descending order. Most of the cases, it is the parameter of ‘average’ salary offered to students of a particular institute.
The data released by NIRF shows that the institutes such as IIT Madras, IIT Delhi , IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Mumbai lag far behind considering the median salary offered to the B.Tech (UG) students of the institutes. In the last 5 years, IIIT Hyderabad saw a huge jump from Rs.10.33 lakh median salary to Rs. 20.35.
The director of IIIT Hyderabad, Prof. P. J. Narayanan says that the institute has always been in the top favourites by multinational companies for hiring employees. He also informed that companies such as Facebook and Apple started campus placements from IIIT Hyderabad and then they moved to other technical institutes including IITs. The graduates from IIIT Hyderabad have better skills in solving unstructured problems which is a result of the research-based teaching process in IIIT Hyderabad for which, companies worldwide prefer to recruit professionals from IIIT Hyderabad.
However, the IIT officials did not agree with the IIIT Hyderbad’s claims and made a different claim that the higher salary packages in IIIT Hyderabad are a result of their curriculum structure, not the researches as it offers Engineering degrees only in Computer Science, there is no comparison of IIIT Hyderabad with the IITs.

A faculty member of IIT Delhi has said that the contrast of median salaries between IIT and IIIT is high because the institute only focuses on Computer Engineering and is not versatile and multi-specialisationary like IITs. The packages offered for Computer Engineers are higher than the other B.Tech Specialisations. He also added that the median salary of IITs are low because it is made after evaluating salaries from all the departments. If the comparison would have been done between the Computer Engineering departments only, the median salary would come out much higher in IITs.
