IIT Delhi Opens India’s First 5G Lab

IIT Delhi Opens India’s First 5G Lab

Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Delhi has set up India’s first 5G lab for the standardization research and manufacturing of 5G equipment. The main aim is to make India globally competitive in the standardization, research and development, and manufacturing of 5G equipment. The inauguration of the lab will take place on 13 April 2018 and it is for the first time any such lab has been established in the country.

Saif Khan Mohammed, IIT Delhi Professor is one of the main force behind the 5G Lab who is working on the technology known as Massive Multiple-Input & Massive Multiple-Output Technology (MIMO). According to him, this technology will help to stop the emittance of harmful radiation which is injurious to our health. It will also work towards less radio interference which will lead to faster and better communication.

For the setup, several antennas have been installed at the base station. These antennas at the base station will help in the faster and reliable communication as there are a large number of mobile terminals working as well on the same frequency channel. They also improve power efficiency which reduces interference with other radio systems. This move will also help in providing broadband in the rural areas of the country which is one of the main aims of the Digital India Programme. As most of the rural areas do not have access to the internet.
