After being declared as the Institute of Eminence (IoE) by Government of India, IIT Delhi will be the first premier technical institute in the country to open its doors to international students via scholarships , with a motive to improve the global rankings, IIT Delhi will also hire foreign professors soon.
By 2019, IIT Delhi is targeting to enrol at least 500 international students in Ph.D courses by offering a full scholarship. The move will improve the global rankings of IIT Delhi in QS World University Rankings and THE World Reputation Rankings . At present, IIT Delhi has a total strength of 9,000 students comprising 2,500 Ph.D scholars. The international student count of IIT Delhi is almost 100 this year.

In a bid to attract international students, IIT Delhi will offer a monthly scholarship of Rs. 28,000 along with free accommodation. In the next years, IIT Delhi will enrol at least 5,000 Ph.D students , of which 1,500 would be from overseas.
At present, no IIT in India offers scholarships to international students. The scholarship scheme is completely restricted to only Ph.D students of Indian origin through government grants. The existing system of examination of IITs is so though that it becomes difficult for international students to get through.

IIT Delhi is also constructing a separate hostel for international students with all facilities. IIT Delhi plans to improve global rankings in the coming years through various initiatives and programmes.
