Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) is taking steps to spread awareness about online courses offered by NPTEL or National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning in Eastern India. For this purpose, IIT Kharagpur is planning to approach institutes of higher learning in Eastern India and make students aware of these courses.

About NPTEL: -
- NPTEL is a joint initiative of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
- It offers 160 courses in various categories including management studies, computer science, agriculture, engineering and humanities, mathematics, basic sciences, engineering and humanities.
This year, around 5 lakh students registered for NPTEL courses while only 7% of students were from Eastern India among it. An official of NPTEL revealed that students, as well as many colleges in Eastern India, are not aware of NPTEL courses. He further revealed that the online courses offered by NPTEL will have more takers if students and colleges in Eastern India are made aware of its advantages. The courses will get more publicity if UGC and AICTE give support for the same, he added.

With an objective to boost enrolments from Eastern India, IIT Kharagpur is negotiating with various institutes of Odisha, West Bengal and North Eastern states. The institute further assured that it would offer credit transfer to the students who enroll in NPTEL courses.
Recently, IIT Kharagpur also organised a workshop with over 100 teachers from private engineering colleges. The workshop majorly focused on enlightening the teachers about NPTEL courses. It has also approached Jadavpur University and Presidency University regarding NPTEL courses.
