The Department of Engineering Design of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras received a huge boost when one of its alumni decided to donate 1 crore rupees for the establishment of “Robotics Research and Teaching Laboratory”. It is one of the many instances where the IIT Madras alumni have helped teaching and research initiative in the institute gather wings. The robotics laboratory which will come into existence with the help of the amount will assist the students immensely in their research and teaching work in the field of Robotics.
While thanking the donor, Professor T. Asokan - Head of Department of Engineering Design in IIT Madras was also very confident about the impact of the laboratory on both the faculty and students. IIT Madras Professor and Dean of International & Alumni Relations Mahesh Panchagnula particularly talked about the laboratory’s impact on the generation of students to come. He believes that the Robotics Laboratory will create a high-tech employable workforce in the days to come.

In the year 2017, Indian Institute of Technology Madras initiated an interdisciplinary dual degree programme Robotics which is currently open for students from various departments in IIT Madras. The programme has, since 2017, fulfilling its objective of developing and nurturing future-generation professionals who can contribute to the development, design and implementation of robotic systems in the field of robotics. The upside potential of the dual degree programme is it will influence the economic growth of the country by improving their productivity.
