Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee established a 1.66 PELOPS Supercomputing Infrastructure on March 7, 2022, for keeping up the pace of research and development in the multidisciplinary domain of Science and Engineering. The IIT Roorkee supercomputing facility was inaugurated by BVR Mohan Reddy, the chairman of the Board of Governors at IIT Roorkee. The installation has been done under the supervision of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC). IIT Roorkee has signed an MoU with CDAC for establishing a state-of-the-art supercomputing facility, including the made-in-Indian components.

The primary aim of installing such supercomputing infrastructure is to provide computational power to the users of IIT Roorkee along with the neighbouring academic institutions. The Supercomputing infrastructure has been installed at IIT Roorkee under a joint initiative taken by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

As per the statement of IIT Roorkee, the institute will organize a capacity building and skill training program for the workforce through this supercomputing mission. The CDAC mission plan to develop and deploy 24 facilities with more than 64 Petaflops cumulative compute power. Till now, CDAC has deployed 11 systems such as JNCASR, IISc, IISER Pune, IITs, NABI-Mohali, etc with a cumulative computing power of more than 20 Petaflops.

According to the statement of PTI ALM RHL, IIT Roorkee is now able to carry out advanced research and can participate in capacity-building programs with the help of this installed supercomputing infrastructure under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM). IIT Roorkee has named this Petascale Supercomputer as ‘PARAM Ganga’. R&D, applications, infrastructure, and HRD are the four major pillars of the NSM, and hence, the NSM functionality is capable to achieve the goal of developing the supercomputing ecosystem of the nation.
