Independence Day 2023: On this date, August 15, not only the land of Bharat but six countries got their independence, albeit in different years. These countries are South Korea, North Korea, Bahrain, Congo, Liechtenstein, and our motherland, India. This year in 2023, August 15 marks 76 years of freedom from the dark age of the British colonial rule that had lasted for 200 years. The independence did not come easy. It came with freedom fighters, their struggles, and sacrifices. A lot is to be spoken about India’s fight for freedom and here is such a recollection of the significant events that led to the largest democracy in the world finally being freed.

August 15, 1947: All that happened on this day, historic facts

The fight for the independence of India began in 1857. Termed the Revolt of 1857, it rose in a major pushback against British rule but was curbed down with brute force. When World War I ended in 1918, India was uniting under the chorus for self-rule or Swarajya. It led to several historic events like Civil Disobedience Movement, Satyagraha, Quit India movement, and other mass protests. After the freedom movement of ‘Quit India’ subsided in 1942, there had not been a prominent movement until the arrival of the Azad Hind Fauj or the Indian National Army.

Led by Netaji Subhas Chandra Boase, over 40,000 soldiers of the newly-formed Indian National Army marched to fight against the British. Soon as this news, along with the news of the Red Fort Trial, was heard by the 25 lakh Indians serving in the British army and navy at that time, the revolt that never could be subsided began. This revolt for independence by the Indians serving in British forces then came to be known as the Naval Mutiny of 1946. Lakhs of common people took to the streets, demanding independence for their motherland. Weakened by World War II, the revolt forced the British to have no option but to retract. The ripple effect of it caused the British to set up a Cabinet Mission and an interim government was formed.

On February 20, 1947, the then British Prime Minister, Clement Atlee, declared that the Britishers would quit India by June 1948. The Indian Independence Bill was introduced on July 4, 1947 in the British House of Commons and was passed within 15 days. Post the tragic event of partition, India finally gained her freedom on August 15, 1947.

The first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, on this day, raised the Indian tricolour above the Lahori Gate of Red Fort in Delhi. The tradition is being followed ever since.
