Hyderabad-based ISB or the Indian School of Business has recently launched an initiative that will carry out national level research studies on the impact and potential of Aadhaar.
Features of the study:
- The research study will be a part of DIRI, also known as the Digital Identity Research Initiative that has recently a grant of $2 million with a validity of 2 years.
- The aim of the research will be by and large to engage research oriented individuals as well as academic institutes of the country and the world to study and promote an ecosystem of research on the Aadhaar.
- The first phase of the study will take into account aspects and impact of Aadhaar on:
- Financial Inclusion
- Public Distribution Schemes
- Benefit Transfer
- Healthcare Systems
- Public Policy

When the announcement regarding the research was made, a 'State of Aadhaar Report 2016-2017' was also released stating the basic overview of Aadhaar system that has been existent in the country for a while now. The report includes the following:
- Governance and legal framework of Aadhaar
- Technological and operational architecture of Aadhaar
- Use of Aadhaar in efforts of social protection, financial inclusion as well as its emergence in other allied sectors
- Features of future research
- Promotion of evidence-centric understanding as well as data capture with respect to the Aadhaar system

While giving details about the initiative, ISB Hyderabad released a statement highlighting the fact India has the biggest biometric system that is being used as a digital identity system currently. Hence, it said, that there is scope for immense research, that too, multi-disciplinary in nature which can give insights about the outcomes that can be expected along with the implications it will have for India as well as for the entire world.
The Dean of ISB, Mr. Rajendra Srivastava said that the institute is confident of carrying out the research that will ultimately lead to the formulation of path-breaking inputs that will act as a basis for policy makers, service providers, educators as well as entrepreneurs to include it for application purposes.
