With an objective to make an impact in the field of ‘Civil Engineering’ , Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad is all set to launch M.Tech course from the next academic session. Already, the civil engineering department of the premier institute got the approval from BoG (Board of Governors) to introduce ‘Structural engineering’ course for M.Tech from the upcoming academic session. The premier engineering institute has made all the necessary arrangements to launch the course.

An official of ISM Dhanbad disclosed that the Civil and Structural Engineering comprises a wide range of disciplines, including road, buildings, bridges, harbours, dams, drainage systems and other structures. Civil and structural designers play a significant role in planning, designing, developing and managing construction as well as repair projects. The new course develops one’s skill and knowledge in drafting and designing of engineering plans as per recognised standards, he explained.
Through the new course, students will learn about different areas of civil engineering, including: -
- Construction
- Project Management
- Design and Testing
- Design and drafting of concrete, roads, pipes and steelwork
- Hydrology
- Stormwater drainage and foundations
Civil engineering involves the wide implementation of mechanics for designing large structures that are fundamental to basic living, such as bridges, buildings, dams, walls and tunnels. On the other hand, Structural Engineering involves designing of structures so that the structures do not collapse or behave in undesirable ways.

ISM Dhanbad , which is also an IIT, is one of the premier public and research institutes in the country. ISM Dhanbad has 18 academic departments covering Applied Sciences, Engineering, Social Sciences, Humanities and Management courses.
