Jamia Millia Islamia celebrated National Education Day 2020 and organised an online panel discussion. The panel highlighted the contributions made by the first Education Minister of India, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and talked about his ideologies on education.

Jamia Millia Islamia or JMI celebrated National Education Day 2020 on November 11, 2020, on the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Education Minister of India. An online panel discussion was organised by the JMI’s Department of Educational Studies. As per the reports, the topic of the discussion was the contribution of Maulana Azad. The event marked the presence of both students and the faculty members of all the programmes offered by the Department.
The discussion on Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was convened by the Associate Professor of the Department of Educational Studies, Dr Arshad Ikram Ahmad. The Head of the Department of Educational Studies, Professor Aejaz Masih stated that Maulana Azad was a great scholar and thinker along with a good orator. The professor further added during the online panel discussion that the man was a huge supporter of Hindu-Muslim unity and considered the nation above any religion.
The guest speaker of the panel, Dr Khalid Mubashshir who is the Assistant Professor in the JMI’s Department of Urdu, highlighted the contributions of the great man and said that Maulana Azad did not want the minority communities to live in the sense of insecurity. He also stressed that a balance between modernity and tradition should be maintained. Dr Mubashshir said that Azad was a firm supporter of composite culture and believed in the freedom of the press. The guest speaker also talked about the ideology of the first Education Minister of India. Azad believed that education should focus less on livelihood and more on personality development.

The Assistant Professor of the department, namely Dr M Jawaid Hussain talked about the background of Azad. The professor said that Maulana Azad was trained in theology and raised in a religious family. He further added that the man was eclectic and unique in his educational ideas. His ‘trans modern’ thoughts represented the best communion of modernity and tradition.
