The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, MoTA, has recognised Jamia Millia Islamia University’s Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (CNESPR) as a Centre of Excellence (CoE). The Ministry has honoured the centre, which happens to be the first research centre on the North East to be established in a Central University, under the component ‘Financial Assistance for support of Centre for Excellence'.
The status of Centre of Excellence is marked as a huge achievement for not just the NE Centre but also for the university. The ministry has also authorized a grant of Rs. 12 lakh to the centre in order to hold a pilot research study on “Documenting the lifeworld of Bhutias in Sikkim”.
This status will also offer various grants-in-aid for the project proposal and the research study from the Central government as sanctioned by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.

The Director of the Centre, Professor Simi Malhotra said that the Centre of Excellence status will further “develop and strengthen” the resource capabilities of the CNESPR at the university in organising action-oriented, qualitative and policy-oriented research of the tribal communities of India’s NE region. It is to empower the Scheduled Tribe communities in order to uphold cultural diversity.
The policy-oriented research studies for the upliftment of Scheduled Tribes or STs of India under the Centre of Excellence status signifies that the Centre will now have to organise the documentation of women's rights in scheduled areas, tribal cultures, creating awareness among Scheduled Tribes (STs) on various Acts & Rules for their advantage, important projects that have caused displacement and resettlement in the region, rules of migration and so on.
