JNU Organises Global Symposium on AI in Governance & Disaster Management

JNUs Special Centre for Disaster Research is hosting a three-day global symposium, from 11th March 2019 to 13th March 2019, in partnership with NDMA, ICSSR, NITI Aayog Skymet Weather and Springer Nature. The three-day symposium at JNU will focus on Artificial Intelligence in Governance and Disaster Management at JNU’s Convention Centre.

In recent years, the number of disasters that have taken place in the country has gone up. It is now beyond the human capacity to assure safety and protection from the wide range of disasters. Machine Learning and Robots or AI could be the answer to ensure the safety of the people as well as institutions in case of disaster taking place in the country.

AI will help in faster mapping, human and geographical vulnerabilities. Along with speeding up the process of detecting issues, the AI will also help in sending directives or warning signals to the appropriate institutions in order to take precautionary actions. The implementation of AI will help in addressing and solving problems such as outdated methods of detecting disasters such as lack of accountability, lack of coordination, lack of understanding on the behalf of the decision-maker, etc.
