The inaugural session of Kochi Campus of Indian Maritime University took place on September 9, 2016 . Union Minister of Shipping, Mr. Pon Radha Krishnan inaugurated the campus. However, the students of B.Sc, Ship Building and Repair of the institute protested at the venue. They alleged that the IMU Campus has been trying to replace the B.Sc course with B.Tech Naval Architecture and Ship Construction course. The students demanded that the University shall withdraw the view and think about the future of the students pursuing B.Sc course.

Addressing the inaugural session, Mr. Radha Krishnan highlighted the importance of the University in nurturing maritime transportation sector. The potential of the maritime sector in India remains untapped. He mentioned that the government has also started ranking of the IMU Campuses.

He said that the ranking would bring a healthy competition among the campuses. The ranking is based on various parameters which include academic excellence, work ethics and discipline. He assured that the campus would be transformed into a research centre by 2017-18.
