A Karthik, Higher Education Secretary informed that a Vice-Chancellor will soon be appointed for the University of Madras. The information was given on Thursday, January 12, 2017, at a syndicate meeting. The meeting was attended by 12 members and senior professors of the university for the discussing the re-constitution of the three-member VC convener committee.

After the completion of when R Thandavan's term in January 2016, the university has been running without a VC. The administration of the university has suffered due to the absence of a VC and prominent decisions and functions such as the convocation have not been organized.
In order to find a new VC for the university, a three-member search panel was appointed. However, no names have been recommended by the panel yet. It was also confirmed at the meeting that S Thirumagan term as the controller of examinations will end without an extension.
Professor M Srinivasan, Head of Criminology Department, will take over the responsibilities as Controller of Examinations and current Heat of Statistics Department, M R Srinivas will be the Dean of College Development Council.

P David Jawahar, Registrar of the University, issued a circular saying that it is mandatory to take prior permission for the academic programmes. Obliging to the demand made during the previous syndicate meeting, Jawahar also presented a white paper regarding the finances of the university till September 30, 2016. He emphasised on the need introducing financial reforms in the university.
