MU bars Students from Writing their Names on Answer Sheets

Mentioning the student’s name on the answer sheets was prohibited in many institutes across India to maintain transparency of copy checking in examinations. Recently Mumbai University (MU) prohibited writing the name and Institute of the student to curb malpractices that sometimes emerged during the assessment of answer sheets.

Less than six months after the Mumbai University brought a provision that allowed students to write their names in question papers, it rolled it back and decided to follow the previous path of not letting students write their names on their answer sheets. When the newly printed answer sheets came to the institutes for examinations, it was seen that it followed the old format where there is no place to mention the names.

A Mumbai University officer of the Education Department informed that writing names in answer sheets were introduced to trace students if he/she makes any mistake in writing seat numbers but many officials were against the decision. That’s why the new format was not considered. Mumbai University 2019 exams began from 25th of March, 2019 and during the exams, old papers which were used previously were re-introduced.

During the assessment of answer sheets, there were multiple cases of malpractices where the student wrote his / her name in the papers. To bar this practice from repeating itself in the future, the decision of rolling out the old format was followed in 2017. The University started checking the papers in on-screen marking (OSM) method. But many papers went missing or hard to read as many students did mistakes in writing their seat numbers. In 2018 October, the University of Mumbai introduced a name sticker that could be put on the examination paper to be removed later. This method faced backlash as it allegedly violated the norms of secrecy needed to be maintained in the exam paper assessments.

Though a University official rejected the allegations by saying in on-screen Marking (OSM) system, the teacher cannot see the first page of the question paper so it does not breach any secrecy norms.
