Mumbai University Colleges Lack NAAC Accreditation, 518 Colleges Have No NAAC Grade

Mumbai University has been struggling to get NAAC accreditation, and most colleges affiliated to MU lack NAAC accreditation. Only 273 MU colleges have NAAC grade. 

Mumbai University Colleges Lack NAAC Accreditation, 518 Colleges Have No NAAC Grade

Mumbai University, which is the second largest state university in India, has been struggling to get a reaccreditation from NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) since 2017. Out of the 791 colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai , only 273 colleges have NAAC accreditation. 518 MU colleges lack accreditation, and the existing scenario is raising questions on the quality of education. NAAC is an autonomous agency/ body that grades higher learning institutes based on their infrastructure, faculty, evaluation, curriculum, and performance.

The NAAC accreditation of Mumbai University expired on April 20, 2017, and the varsity has failed to apply for reaccreditation on time. Therefore, the NAAC accreditation process of Mumbai University has constantly been delayed.

Out of 791 colleges, only 116 colleges affiliated to Mumbai University have the NAAC grade of ‘A’. Since the varsity does not have a NAAC grade, it is unable to avail the benefit from the Rs. 340-crore aid approved under the RUSA (Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan).

Apart from Mumbai University, many colleges affiliated to SPPU (Savitribai Phule Pune University) also lack NAAC accreditation. Out of 882 colleges, only 180 colleges affiliated to SPPU have NAAC grade. The most distressing part is that only 85 colleges out of 180 have a NAAC grade of ‘A’.

The state government of Maharashtra has considered the issue and figuring out plans to double the number of colleges with NAAC accreditation. The Higher and Technical Education Department of Maharashtra is planning to have at least 2,763 colleges in Maharashtra with NAAC score by 2024. At the same time, the department aims to have 860 colleges with NAAC ‘A’ grade .
