Three students will be competing for 1 seat in MBA and MMS courses across Maharashtra in 2020. The state common entrance test (CET) cell got 1.24 lakh applications for MH-CET entrance exams for MMS and MBA courses. The intake capacity is around 36,500.
MBA has been popular with students for a few years and the number of institutes offering management courses has also seen an increase. From 34,000 seats in the year 2018-19, the number is 36,500 in 2020-21. The number of registrations have also increased by 15 per cent in the last two years as per a senior official from the state CET cell.

Registrations for MH-CET (for MBA and MMS) was 1.11 lakh and 1.06 lakh in 2019 and 2018. Though the number of seats has witnessed an increase in the last two years, until 2018, many institutes had vacant seats, which led the institutes to shut down the respective divisions or even the institutes. According to the date received by the state CET cell, from 38,190 seats in 2015-16, the intake capacity reduced to 34,000 in 2018-19. The trend has now been shifted in the last two years as more and more students are interested in MBA. Seat vacancy has reduced over the years in management institutes due to the reduction of seats and also there has been an increased in the demand among applicants. According to the state CET cell data, in 2019-20, the seat vacancy in MMS/MBA courses was at 13 per cent.

According to the director of the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) , there has been an increased demand for MBA in the last few years. Even engineering students go for MBA/MMS courses due to the paucity of jobs in their field. A lot of students are of the opinion that management courses can help them with better job opportunities in future.
