President Kovind Highlights Three-Fold Objectives of Scientific Research at IISER

  • President Kovind graced IISER Mohali's seventh convocation ceremony on 20th May.
  • His speech highlighted the three main objectives of scientific research that the graduating students must keep in mind and accordingly work towards achieving it.
President Kovind Highlights Three-Fold Objectives of Scientific Research at IISER

Honorable President Ram Nath Kovind addressed the graduating students of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali (IIESR) at the seventh convocation ceremony on 20th May 2018. While speaking to them, he highlighted that s cientific research has three main objectives which have the capacity to serve as a guiding light.

On elaborating further, he said that the purpose of scientific research is threefold . Firstly, the fact that science and technology play a major role in nation-building and it will always remain essential to find answers to developmental questions such as climate change, providing low-cost but effective healthcare to the public, solving the issue of water scarcity and to build sustainable cities to help increase farmers' productivity.

The second objective is to maintain a symbiotic relationship between business and industry . This majorly includes converting the research done in the labs into commercially viable products, using technology to promote efficiency and employment. To justify his argument, he gave the example of Silicon Valley in Bengaluru and said that IISER must play a similar role in Mohali.

The third and the last objective is the importance of science education and research in expanding knowledge and for blue-sky innovation. According to him, this is the of the most critical value in terms of scientific research.

Prez Kovind further highlighted the importance of scientific research as it keeps alive the instinct of curiosity which is the root of human civilization.

In the end, he congratulated and appreciated the fact that 40% of the graduating students were girls. Additionally, both the gold medals for academic performance were won by girls. He concluded his speech by saying that this is a step forward in gender equity and in making India a developed nation where everyone is equal.
