Punjab state universities struggle to bring admission through Centralised Counselling Process this year as well. Abroad studies, Direct admission agencies get blamed by the officials.

Not Many Takers for Centralised Admission to 3 Punjab Universities

Only 5,000 applications for admissions have been received for 50,000 seats through Centralised Admission Process (CAP) in Three Punjab State Universities. IK Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKGPTU), Kapurthala; Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU), Bathinda and Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana is struggling to bring students on-board in the admission drive of the current 2019-20 admission session.

The second and the final round of the online counselling process for admissions to the three universities and the constituent colleges closed at PTU recently. 36,000-37,000 seats are of engineering among the total 50,000 seats while the remaining are of management courses. Engineering stream alone has seen only 1,748 students who appeared for the counselling.

A senior official has pointed out two reasons behind the disheartening response from the students.

He stated that there is a trait in Punjab to move out of India to foreign countries for higher education. And the second reason is some agents are luring students for discounted first semester fees and direct admission in colleges and students are being smitten by their invitations. These agents also have agencies in Bihar and Jammu Kashmir where the tempt students for direct admission in the institutes.

Another official has stated that only the students who want to avail the government scholarship schemes have only applied for the Centralised Counselling.
