Regulator Moots B.Sc Nursing Course for Commerce and Arts Students

Indian Nursing Council has come up with a draft proposal to let students from Commerce/ Arts stream pursue a B.Sc Nursing course. Admission to GNM courses will be stopped from 2021.

B.Sc Nursing Course

A draft proposal has been sent to the Indian Nursing Council and if the same gets approved, students with commerce and arts stream will be able to pursue a B.Sc Nursing course . The draft proposal states that candidates with different streams such as Science/Arts/Humanities/Commerce and have passed class 12th exam or equivalent and have a minimum of 45% marks in the academic/ core subjects and passed English individually will be eligible to pursue B.Sc Nursing Course

The Council is seeking feedback and suggestion on the draft proposal through email latest by January 24th, 2020. At present, only Science students who have cleared 10+2 with Biology are eligible to apply for B.Sc Nursing.

The B.Sc Nursing course is a four-full time course comprising of eight semesters. The course prepares students to become a registered nurse who is qualified to practice in multiple settings such as government or public healthcare settings.

Other proposals are given by the Indian Nursing Council to boost nursing education in India and to improve the infrastructure facility of colleges. The proposal came into action last year after the Council decided to opt for a single entry-level for Nursing by scrapping General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course. GNM is a diploma course whereas the B.Sc Nursing course is a four-year degree course. In September 2019, the Council has decided to opt for a single level entry for nursing to ensure the quality of nursing education.

Admission to GNM courses will be stopped from the year 2021. As of now, 3215 there are 3215 GNM schools in India which produce 1.2 lakh nurses in a year.
