SC Asks MCI to Exercise Caution While Permitting Medical Colleges to Impart Education

In keeping with the discrepancy of medical colleges’ offerings and in their rush to accept fresh admissions in medical colleges in India for the academic session of 2017 – 2018, the Supreme Court of India has subtly advised the Medical Council of India (MCI) to exercise caution while giving permission to medical colleges in India as well as dental colleges in India for new admissions for the academic session of 2017 – 2018.

The Supreme Court advised the Central Government and MCI to use utmost discretion while granting permission to medical colleges to impart education to students for the new session. The Supreme Court stressed that any lapse in this process could result in major calamities, as India will be thrown into a future without qualified doctors. It stressed on the urgency of the situation and added that MCI should strive towards doctors who are not just qualified but who exhibit impeccable qualities and show sensitivity.

The bench comprised of Justice Amitava Roy & Justice AM Khanwilkar and they cited examples of the IQ City Medical College, Durgapur, which has been running since 2013.

It asked MCI to consider allowing the running of the college in consultation with the newly constituted Oversight Committee within two weeks before granting it permission to admit 150 students for the academic year 2017-18.

The college had earlier quashed the order of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, refusing to renew the permission to commence classes for the academic session of 2017 – 2018.

The Supreme Court asked MCI to discuss with the college representatives, their point of view & also visit the college campus for an inspection.
