The Savitribai Phule Pune University , commonly known as SPPU, has come up with a plan to set up its research centre in the region of Ladakh. Some talks of the preliminary level regarding this subject were held between the officials of the reputed SPPU and the LAHDC (Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council). This is how the development came to light.
The academicians in Pune came up with this idea of setting up and off-campus centre of SPPU after Article 370 was scrapped by the Centre on 5th August 2019. The Vice-Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University, Nitin Karmalkar, spoke on this issue and said that the officials of the university are talking to the officials in Ladakh regarding the matter. He said that the centre will initially be dedicated to the science faculty, primarily for carrying out various research activities. Kamalkar also said that at present they are exploring all the options that are available and can be possible.

Some officials of the Pune University had recently paid a visit to Jammu and Kashmir during which they had scheduled and eventually discussed their idea of setting up a centre in the state. Given the situation, the officials of SPPU had stated that it was practically impossible to immediately start with the setting up of an off-campus centre of SPPU anywhere in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from that, as per the revelations made by an official, there are certain other limitations as Savitribai Phule Pune University is a government-run university which functions under the government of Maharashtra.
The Registrar of SPPU, Prafulla Pawar, said that it would be relatively easier to establish the first centre of SPPU in Ladakh than anywhere else in Jammu and Kashmir. After the Senate of SPPU had given approval to the decision of extending an arm of the campus to the two newly formed union territories of India, the officials of the varsity had decided to approach the government of Maharashtra in this regard. Some other deemed universities and colleges of Pune are also keen on opening such educational centres.
