St. Xavier's University, Kolkata gets Bar Council's nod to Start St. Xavier's Law School

The St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata has introduced law courses after getting the nod from the BCI. The admission will be taken as per the performance in the XLAT and CLAT examinations in the Xavier’s School of Law, Kolkata.

St. Xavier's University, Kolkata gets Bar Council's nod to Start St. Xavier's Law School

After the Bar Council of India (BCI) gave their nod to the St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, the university is set to start their Law courses under the St. Xavier's Law School. The course will be conducted from the 2019-20 academic year itself. The university which is the second university in Kolkata run by Jesuit (The Society of Jesus) which started its academics in the 2017-18 academic year. The college will take admissions in the law courses through the Xavier’s Law Admission Test (XLAT).

After the introduction of the MBA Programme in Xaviers Business School, this year marked the inception of the Xavier Law School. The Law school has already opened its admission portal and the admissions are set to run till 12th July.

Rev. Fr. Felix Raj, the vice-chancellor of the St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata has said that the introduction and inclusion of the Law Course in XSL is a part of the St. Xavier’s University’s 2025 vision plan. He added that the Legal studies in the Xavier's Law School will not only conduct the legal studies but also will focus to inculcate values of life within the students of the department. Rev. Raj added that values are essential to be a well-known legal practitioner. The legal studies department will be a gift to the legal sector of India by the St. Xavier’s University.

The Xavier’s School of Law, Kolkata will offer two integrated courses for 5 years of duration which are, B.A.+LL.B and B.Com+LL.B . The admissions in these courses in XLS, Kolkata will be wholly based on the Xavier’s Law Admission Test or XLAT which will be a university level entrance examination for LL.B.

Xavier's School of Law, Kolkata Admission Eligibility Criteria

The admission test for LL.B courses in Xaviers Law School will be conducted on 14th July 2019. The primary eligibility criteria for admissions in XLS is that the student has to be a pass-out of 10+2 level in any stream from any board and his/her age should be less than 20 years at the admissions. The aspirants who want to take admissions in B.Com + LL.B integrated course must have studied Mathematics in +2 levels.

Xavier's School of Law, Kolkata Admission Process through XLAT

The Xavier Law Admission Test (XLAT) examination is one of the primary examinations accepted for the admissions in the Xavier’s School of Law under the St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata. The XLAT examination will be conducted on 4 topics in MCQ (Multiple Choice Question) formats. The XLAT exam will test a student’s English, Logical reasoning, Legal Awareness and General Awareness.

The Vice-chancellor has made it clear that the students who have a CLAT examination score are exempted from XLAT entrance and are also eligible to apply in the university.

A Law Library, Legal Aid Clinic and a Moot Court have already been set up in the Xavier’s Law School (XLS) for conducting the law courses with efficiency. The candidates studying in the University will be taken to the regular visits to the district and high courts of the state and also to the Supreme Court for better understanding the profession and legal affairs in the application level under the guidance of trained faculties of XLS. The Xavier’s Law School, Kolkata has plans to introduce postgraduate and research courses in the future.
