Suresh Bhardwaj, Himachal Pradesh Education Minister said strict action will be taken against any private university which is found selling fake degrees. Referring to a complaint received by UGC, Bhardwaj said in the state assembly that as per the complaint, 18 private universities allegedly, including two in Himachal Pradesh were selling fake degrees.
A letter has been sent to the HP Private Institutions Regulatory Commission so that it could be looked into further. Bharadwaj stated that no evidence has been given in the letter. and the state police is taking action in this regard by probing the matter. Bharadwaj also mentioned how the fake degree scam and the sale of degrees gave a bad reputation to Himachal and complaint has been made to the HP Private Educational Regulatory Commission and also the Director-General of Police

Mukesh Agnihotri, the Leader of Opposition Mukesh Agnihotri had also highlighted that there were reports about the involvement of two private universities of Himachal in a fake degree scam.
Also, recently a fake degree scam which included the sale of 5 lakh degrees by two private universities in Himachal came to light. The UGC had written to the concerned authorities in Himachal in August 2019 to look into it but there was no action taken by the authorities in the last six months.

Himachal had allowed eighteen private universities to run in the state, nine in Solan itself but there were no efforts from the government’s side to check malpractices.
