Swansea Health Board Recruitment 2023: An Overview
The director of nursing and patient experience at Swansea Health Board, Gareth Howells in an interview revealed the urgency to fill vacant posts of nursing staff. The director said that recruiting nurses from overseas is vital for hiring experienced staff. Per reports approved by chief executive Mark Hackett, the board has the plan to recruit at least 350 overseas nurses in this financial year.
Recently, a shortage of 40% of the staff has been identified in acute care and surgery departments. Though agency nurses had somewhat helped in providing the workforce the health board required; however, still there's an urgent need to hire more staff.
Finding nurses overseas is considered by the authorities as a cheaper option. Per data, the board has to incur a cost of around £ 4.7m for recruiting 350 staff in 2023-24. Well, it seems to save the cost of around £1.5m in hiring agency nurses.
In regards to the recruitment process, a board meeting was held, and joint efforts were taken by Swansea and Neath Port Talbot as well as the Welsh government to improve the skills of homegrown nurses through training.
In a recent update, the health board informed Local Democracy Reporting about the recruitment of staff from Africa, the Philippines, the Caribbean and also India. The decision of Swansea Health Board to recruit 900 overseas nurses is expected to reduce workforce shortage in health care facilities.
