Addressing the fact that many UG students in Tamil Nadu are unable to complete the course due to a failure in English, the Higher Education Department has proposed a common English syllabus to improve the basic skills of its graduates.
The Higher Education Department of Tamil Nadu is planning to introduce a common English syllabus for all undergraduate courses offered in the state. The updated English syllabus of Tamil Nadu will focus on Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing Skills. The aim of the new syllabus will be to help undergraduate students improve their command over all areas of the English language.
Reports suggest that the course will be called 'English for Communication' and it will be implemented for students enrolled in first-year undergraduate programmes in Tamil Nadu from the academic year 2020-21.

A mandatory course named 'Professional English' is also planned by the department. It will target courses in the fields of Commerce, Sciences, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Arts and Management. In this course, students will learn the meanings and usage of terms relevant to their course, thus increasing their professional vocabulary. This course will be taught by the subject teachers only.
The proposal has been approved by Vice-Chancellors in a meeting of the higher education council in February. The course has been made mandatory but it has been left for the universities to decide whether they want to include it as an add-on course or replace one of the core subjects with this course.
As per the information shared by a higher education official in Tamil Nadu, a large number of students are unable to complete their degree courses due to failure in the English subject. The updated syllabus will ensure the upskilling of students and build a foundation for the students to improve further.
Another advantage of the proposal cited by the official is that it will enable the higher education department to record video lectures and upload it to common platforms such as YouTube. These lectures will be delivered by the best English teachers and will available to all the students.
