Among the 2.6 lakh candidates in 2021, 1.5 lakh (58.1 per cent) registered to take the final level of the examination, which determines admissions to 23 Indian Institutes of Technology. A total of 1.5 lakh students passed the mains exam the previous year, with 64.1% registering. Compared to 2014, when the registration rate was 83.1%, this is a significant decline. There was a steady drop across the years at 79.6 per cent, 78.6 percent, 77.4 percent, 71.7 percent, and 71.7 percent in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 respectively.

"IIT seats aren't guaranteed for students with lower JEE-Main rankings. The JEE-Main score, however, will guarantee admission to good technology institutes across India, which will admit students solely based on the JEE-Main score,” said a senior professor at IIT Bombay.

According to a senior official of IIT Kanpur, there is a lot of competition to get into IITs, given the limited number of seats. In spite of the increase in the number of IITs, the total number of seats still remains small compared to the sheer number of students vying for them.

Similarly, Subhasis Chaudhuri, director of IIT Bombay which is organizing this year's JEE Advanced, expressed similar sentiments. "Some of them may have thought that it is better not to prolong their agony by taking the Advanced test after they have already made a career decision," he said.
