The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently announced the inclusion of four-year degree courses in the traditional UG courses in more than 150 universities in the country. In recent news, a number of top universities have adopted and introduced a Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) for the ongoing 2023-24 session . Popular Universities like Delhi University (DU), and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) are included in this list. Other top universities like Mumbai University, Bengaluru University, and Calcutta University have already given options to their students to take up these courses. The new 4-year UG courses are introduced by UGC in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP-2020).

UGC: 4-Year UG Courses in 150 Universities of India

As many as 150 universities including the top central universities of the country have included four-year degree courses in their 2023-24 curriculum. Traditional courses like BA and B.Sc have been upgraded to an extended year of academics which includes internships, skill-based courses and research. The universities have also given exit options for all students after the third year if they want to. This upgrade in the undergraduate courses has been added in accordance with the amendments provided in the National Education Policy 2020.

Several top universities of India including DU, Vishwa Bharati University, Assam University, Tejpur University, Central University Jammu, Sikkim University, Rashtriya Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya, Symbiosis National University, and others have made provisions in their UG-courses to be for 4 years.

Why Take a 4-Year UG Course in University?

The students who are currently pursuing a degree course or aiming to take admission next year are a little confused about whether to take these extended courses or not. However, the four-year UG courses have a lot more to offer than they seem to. The students will be given opportunities to explore more in their respective fields. All those students will be given a chance to research and pursue skill-based training, and internships in this one year to make them employable.

However, the UGC and the universities have assured that the four-year UG courses have not been made compulsory so far and the students will be given an early-exit option after the third year if they do not wish to continue.
